no need to talk about references, i am an artist XD
ofcourse makign sprites that look good costs a lot of time and nerves.
i'd start with a few placeholders and then like make 12 or 24 reference pictures of a real globe in the turned positions and go with the sprites for 3, 6, 9 and 12 (oh and 15, 18, 21, 24) that's already 8 sprites to do. i'd be too lazy and go with 6, 12, 18, 24 :D
