The Phoenix Rises
The Phoenix Rises is a mod that adds a new nation to HOI4: New Byzantium.

In the calm before the storm, a bolt strikes- the assassination of Ionnis Metaxas, leader of Greece. From within the dissaray of the political system, a proud and eager historian by the name of Perzeuz Konstantinos has worked his way into the government through stubbornness and diplomacy, leaving him with the power to materialize the ideas he holds of a resurrected empire; New Byzantium.

Take control of the small nation, and conquer your way back to Byzantine greatness! Bend the people to your will, and choose their politics for them!

Research a Byzantine-specific new unit, and use it to rip the enemies to shreds! Including nearly 30 new events, an extensive new focus tree, and a country-specific new technology for a brand-new unit, this mod gives you options to play however you choose- oppose the Nazis, and protect the passage to Africa, befriend Hitler, and become a member of the Axis? Or in late game, become democratic and expand your political reaches to the Americas, forge new political factions, and spread democracy across the world... Or maybe even... Start World War 3?

The choices are yours as The Phoenix Rises, decide the fate of the world now!


Version 1.1 Update Notes:
  • Fixed an issue in which cores would not be gained on Greek territory as a result of the opening event of the game
  • Added tank technology flavor descriptions
  • Fixed an error in which the synthetic refinery production would not produce specific resources as per the technology unlock
  • Added a new integrated decisions section
  • Decisions aid campaign progress by helping core states and give other benefits
  • One sparkling new decision reward for completing the restoration campaign


P.S. - Any feedback would be much appreciated. This was a one-man project with over 180,000 characters of original code, nearly fifty hours of testing, refining, and improving- 50 custom-made GFX files, new units, the whole shabang. If anyone wants the files for this mod to have a look at, drop me a DM and I'll sort out copying them over!

Hi MACEDONIA IS GREEK, unfortunately at the moment it looks like I'm going to be stuck under other projects before I can come back to this mod. If you know anyone that would like to continue development, please get them in touch and I'll be glad to transfer all the work files I have if they want to continue the project!

This would be great! My personal preference in such mods is flavor (both gameplay impacting, and not). Stuff like events/modifiers/decisions for capturing cities, allying with certain nations, being at war with someone, etc. Different paths in focuses allowing you pick as many different options as possible.

Things like custom models - I personally play with camera pretty high up, so I rarely see those.

But as I said, this is all personal preference, and you focus on what you enjoy doing most! Have fun working on it :)

Hey Alfie, I did enjoy playing this mod quite a bit, and would be happy to see it continue. While current Greek focus tree does indeed add Byzantium, it is quite different from what you did, so it does make sense in my head to continue development of your vision.

Ultimately though this is up to you, if you wish to continue or not. Best of luck to you anyways!

Update for anyone reading this, the mod has essentially been made redundant by the addition of DLC from HOI that adds Byzantium as a playable formable nation. Whilst I'm now in the position to return to working on this mod, I'm unsure as to whether it'd be useful, as HOI (In my headcanon) saw this mod and stole my idea (I am joking, obviously). If you guys are overly keen to see more work on this mod, drop a comment letting me know, and if it gets enough support, I'll get cracking on working on it again. Thanks!

Hi CrunchyVegetables,

I've been working on this mod a while now and it's not dead, I'm just busy with University work and I'm also working on an extremely exciting collaboration mod that'll be coming in the next 6 months or so. For now, progress on updates for the mod and changes is on hold, but when I get the chance I'm slowly making additions and changes to the mod in my free time so that when I feel it's ready for a new update it'll get one.
