it's about taking an oath in god's name, then not following through
it's about lying while swearing under an oath to god's name
now in Hebrew, the original text, there's a lot of ambiguity - many modern scholars translate it as "vain swearing" - one of the problems of reading the Bible is that it's so very old, and we don't have a that point of view that the people who wrote it did
there are words and cultural concepts we just don't understand - getting your history from the Bible is like trying to write Japanese history from some Dragonball Z comics, a T.V. guide, and the poems of Basho
most modern American readings of the Bible come from reading it as a White American without taking those cultural differences into account
your quote is funny, but it's based on a an interpretation of the Bible that even professional scholars are unsure of the translation of
It's one of the 10 commandments
"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." - Exodus 20:7
Using the Lord's name in vain means using it as a common word instead of giving proper reverence. In this case - using it as an interjection. By being careful not to do this and limiting exposure to instances of using the Lord's name in vain is one way to maintain proper respect for God.
