Operation Grindstone
3 items
Description
Introduction
Due to the rapid and uncontrollable deterioration of relations between the United States and the CSAT alliance, the outbreak of war has been inevetable. Operation Grindstone represents the first officially sanctioned operation against the CSAT alliance, a full scale mobilization of troops aimed at taking control of the island of Altis.

Situation
We intend to launch a full scale assault on Altis within the next 24 hours, however we will require control of the airport in order to do so. Taking the airport will require a massive assault, and the presence of a staging area nearby will allow us to take it that much faster. Command has identified the village of Telos as the ideal location as it represents an easily defensible position close enough to the airport that our troops will be able to strike quickly, but not far enough away that vehicles will be required.

Execution
You will move from your insertion point into the town of Telos, eliminate any CSAT patrols you find and secure the town. We're running low on available manpower, so you'll be going in alone - however if enemy resistance proves substantial we will task a drone to your sector to provide you with intel.

More
If you enjoyed this mission, feel free to check out some of my other missions which follow the same format. Also, be sure to try them out in CO-OP for a completely new experience.

About
This mission can be played in either Singleplayer or 2 Player CO-OP. When playing in Co-Op you will have the ability to respawn, however enemies will be more difficult to kill and the number of enemies will be increased to 15 (from 10 in singleplayer). Once you've eliminated 2/3 of the enemy forces, a drone will come on station to provide you with (almost) real-time position updates on the remaining enemy forces. You can check their positions on your map. You've also been given a MediKit, so you will be able to heal yourself completely as many times as you need.

This mission has been designed to force you to play cautiously, and will reward you greatly if you do so. Take it slow, check your corners, avoid remaining in the same position after engaging a patrol and always move from cover to cover - assume that you could be fired upon at any point and try to always be in a good position should that happen.

Hints
- If you come under fire from an enemy, it is generally more prudent to move to cover before returning fire as the amount of time it requires to locate and engage the person firing at you will usually be longer than the amount of time necessary for them to finish you off.
- Avoid walking in streets, they provide little cover and make you an obvious target. Rather stick to back alleys, or move from building to building if absolutely necessary.
- Use the stance adjust features (Ctrl+WASD) and lean (QE) to present as little of yourself as possible when checking corners or peeking from windows. Not only are you less likely to be spotted, but you're also less likely to be hit when the enemy starts shooting.
- Full-Auto was designed for a reason, use it. You'd be amazed how many times you will get out of a sticky situation by pointing your rifle in the general direction of the enemy and letting loose a magazine.
- Don't assume. Just because an area was clear the last time you moved through it, certainly doesn't mean it will be the next time you do. Check everything, every time.

I'd like to thank zorilya for his brilliant Garrison script, it made my life a whole lot easier than it would have been otherwise.

Liked it. Maybe UAV support is a tad overpowered

Contrary to Sumsl and 404_Skillnotfound, I think this is a very good mission to play and improve your ARMA gaming skills. You need to move a lot and yes, you don't get to blow shit up and fight a platoon head on, but that's not the objective anyway. Stealth and patiente win this mission, so if you are used to head on action you might find it boring. This one requires strategic thinking, if you have played ARMA like 350 hours you might not be there yet.
Thanks for the author, I enjoyed the challenge.
Cheers,
V.

I do not recommend this mission. lazy design, bad voiceacting and absolutely no goal whatsoever, except: "kill everything".

1. you spawn outside the village telos, with little gear and a virtual ammobox. no custom gear no roles and the players aren't even in a squad. just take your favorite weapons and such and go on.
2. the radio calls in the beginning are just gruesome. without the voiceover they would be acceptible.
3. the only thing you do, is killing everybody inside the village. maybe this is enough for some players, but calling this a mission is just wrong.

in conlusion i give this a downvote. there are way better missions out there and everyone who wants to play a well designed mission should not download this one.

Mission is great for a warmup before getting on a multiplayer server.

Just no. Would not attempt to play again. From the voice acting (god please no, just put text) to whatever happened to the enemy AI. I may not be good at arma, but the 3 2-player coop missions we did before this were infinitely more fun. -1/10 IGN

I found something that I've only ever encountered on this mission, which is that when an enemy is within line of sight to me, I get the standard ArmA "Target, x meters" thing that I thought I had disabled, but it also snaps my vision either onto the target or to the right of the target. I have no clue what causes it but it made aiming impossible when behind a 2-man team, as my point of aim just kept bouncing around. Even on one target, for that matter, at point blank range, I would rotate right about 45 degrees and be unable to actuallly aim at him before I would snap to the right again.
