The 100 Years War. (1400)

Description
This is a historical scenario taking place in the final stages of the 100 Years War in a fase called the Burgundian-Armagnac civil war. Around the year 1400 the war was on a hold after the Truce of Leulinghem. France, who arguably came out the victor of the Carolingian Fase, is now in turmoil. Charles VI of Valois, who was once called 'the well loved' has gone mad on a campaign to Brittany and is now a very unstable and erratic leader. His kingdom now is only held together by his ministers and marshals. Powerfull French nobles now fight a bitter power struggle for control of the French regency. The main player on the chessboard that is French medieval politics is John of Burgundy, the cousin of the king, called by the common people 'The Fearless'. His large and wealthy domains in the north of France and Burgundy supplies him with the powerbase to exercise complete authority over the king. But recently the nobles of France, afraid of the tremendous influence of the Duke of Burgundy, have bounded together in an coalition against him. Their leader is Louis, Duke of Orleans, the brother of the king and a powerplayer in the political heart of France. He is assisted by one of the most impressive French nobleman in the early 15th century, Bernard of Armagnac. This faction will become known as the Armagnac faction while the supporters of the Duke of Burgundy will become known as the Burgundians hence the name 'Burgundian-Armagnac Civil war'. Both factions will through war, intrigue and diplomacy fight out a bloody civil war, weakening the mighty kingdom. These events have not gone unnoticed however because on the fringes of the French kingdom her old enemies begin mass their armies. England, Frances age old rival, humiliated by their defeats in the end of the last century, is now under a new rule. The weak king Richard II has been replaced by his stronger and well loved cousin Henry IV Bolingbroke, starting the Lancaster branch of the Plantagenet family. Henry, seeing the disorder in France is already making plans to revive his families claims on the throne. He recently married the daughter of the King of Navarra hoping to get their support in the south. The King of Navarra, Charles II, a relative of the King of France and son of Charles the Bad has still some unresolved issues with the French crown he would like to settle in field of battle. Now, with their Albion alliance firmly in place and the Kingdom of France involved in a civil war, this might be his time to strike. In Brittany, another rebellious Duchy under nominal French rule, John of Montfort now rules the land. He and his family always had a complicated relationship with the French crown and have supported either side in the 100 Years War. Recently with the political shifts the position of Brittany as 'independent' have been threatened by the encroachment of the French kings, wanting to annex the large duchy into France. With the sick king and the bickering nobles. John sees his chance to free himselve from French influence and to strengthen his domains. In the south another power struggle is going on. Avignon, once home of the Popes, is now occupied by the antipope Benedict XIII. He refuses to serve the French kings who kept him in protection and is now diplomaticly isolated. Fearfull of being ousted of French lands he seeks new allies. At last we have one more mayor faction within the Kingdom of France. Louis of Anjou, also a cousin of the king, holds the rich lands of Provence and Anjou within the French sphere of power. Given his many failed attempts to claim the kingdom of Naples from his rivals, the Kings of Hungary, he now sets his eye on French politics. In the turmoil theres much to gain for an abitious and high born man as himselve.

In this scenario you will control one of the mayor factions in this conflict that was a part of the 100 Years War between England and France. The player will have to use diplomacy and skill to achieve his objectives and to defeat his rivals. Will you play as France and restore the kingdom to his former glory? As one of the Dukes fighting for power and control? Or as one of France's many enemies looking to gain the advantage now that the French are divided?
