GLaDOS: Welcome, [subject name here]. Please be advised that you may be experiencing some side effects as a result of your prolonged cryogenic stasis, but these should soon pass. If they persist for longer than 6-8 hours, please see the nearest medical professional, because that may mean that some of your internal organs have not woken up as quickly as your brain has. Disclaimer: There are no available medical professionals in the facility at this time.

On behalf of Aperture Laboratories, allow me to introduce myself to you: I am GLaDOS, Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, and I will be your guide for the duration of this venture. I have brought you here for a very specific reason, so listen carefully, [subject name here]. I will NOT repeat myself.

In front of you, you should see a door, and not much else. Soon that door will open, and then you will see another door. This second door leads to a vault which once belonged to Cave Johnson, the illustrious founder of our very own Aperture Science. Your job is to enter the vault, pass through all five layers of security checks, and reach the innermost chamber, where you will retrieve an object known as a "Heart Core". I will be monitoring you throughout, and will provide you with helpful hints and tips in the event that you do perform to expectations. Once you bring the Heart Core back to me, I will grant you your freedom. Sounds good, doesn't it? That's because it is. Don't mess it up.

Now, you may be wondering what this "Heart Core" does. Well... Let's just say, it is very important that you bring it to me. As in, fate-of-the-world important. Trust me, you're doing not just me but also humanity a favor by doing this. What little remains of humanity, anyway.

Oh, one last thing. As you go through the vault chambers, you may hear a voice talking to you on occasion. A voice besides mine, that is. This is the voice of Cave Johnson, the owner of this vault, and what you are hearing are voice clips which have been stored here for the sake of posterity. Mr. Johnson was very vain, and if there was one thing he hated, it was the thought that future generations might not have the chance to listen to his angelic voice. Ignore them.

I've opened the door now. Go on. And remember: no Heart Core, no freedom.
