The Mako was conceived as a return to the original MTF combat doctrine for smaller large grid combatants. Ships that were able to manouver fast enough to challenge small grid craft and hold off an entire squadron of them, while being able to fly circles around capital ships acting as a fast moving decoy, peeling off their turrets with their fixed weaponry, to enable destroyers and cruisers to do the disabling damage.

Being a corvette, this vessel is the smallest hull that can carry a jump drive plus basic components like an assembler. Its inception came a bit late for the task it was designed for: To match and counter the Invader's Imerat Class Destroyer, a ship of similar size and weaponry (different classification system). The Mako had a troubled and lengthy design history, in part for being a collaborative effort between three companies: Mars own Red Sands Dynamics [RSD] and the privately owned Whiplash Military Industries [WMI] and Aegis Systems Military [ASM]. Said companies where given the task of coming up with a reconfiguration of a previously existing hull, the Enceladus Class Corvette designed by NorBe, a ship that went through trials and modifications by RSD and had been adopted by the MTF in limited numbers, as well as by other forces in the system.

The joint venture between the three partners produced several mockups, all based on the power plant and engine cluster of the Enceladus but with different bow and superstructure configurations. The project was overdue for several months and many defense analysts beleived it soon to be cancelled. Nonetheless, the Mako was finished and well received by the MTF that was lacking a ship of this size for a long time.

*Rechristened Mako from Nereid to keep with the MTF tradition of naming ships of this role after sharks.
