I really wish they had included the good ending in the main game of Final Fantasy XV. As much as I appreciated the story and its emotional weight, the original ending left me with a bittersweet feeling that never quite sat right. It felt like the characters and we as players deserved a more hopeful conclusion after everything they went through.

For anyone who felt the same way or wasn’t fully satisfied with how the story wrapped up, I highly recommend reading FINAL FANTASY XV: The Dawn of the Future. It’s a novel that serves as an alternate ending and was originally planned as DLC content before it was canceled.

In this version of the story, we get what many fans hoped for: a more optimistic and fulfilling resolution. It reimagines the fates of key characters yes, even Ardyn and delivers a narrative where everyone survives and finds peace in their own way. It adds so much depth to the lore and provides the emotional closure that was missing from the main game.

If you love FFXV, reading The Dawn of the Future is a must. It feels like the ending we all needed and the one the characters truly deserved.

Summary of What Happens to the Main Characters in Final Fantasy XV: The Dawn of the Future

Noctis Lucis Caelum
In the original game, Noctis embraces his role as the Chosen King and sacrifices himself to bring peace to the world by destroying Ardyn and purging the Starscourge.
In The Dawn of the Future, Noctis chooses to defy this fate. He questions the necessity of sacrificing himself and seeks an alternate path. With the support of his friends and the Astrals, Noctis overcomes his prophesied destiny and survives. Instead of dying for the world, he chooses to live for it. By the end of the story, he is alive, free, and finally reunited with Lunafreya. For the first time, he has a future he can truly call his own.

Lunafreya Nox Fleuret
Once confined to the role of a sacrificial Oracle, Lunafreya dies early in the original game after aiding Noctis.
In the alternate timeline, she is resurrected by Bahamut, though she is afflicted with a mysterious and dangerous power that drains life from those around her. Her arc centers on learning to control and repurpose this power for good. She transforms from a passive figure into an active force of healing and protection. By the end, Lunafreya is alive, no longer bound by divine expectations, and walks her own path alongside Noctis as a partner, not a martyr.

Ardyn Lucis Caelum
Initially presented as the primary antagonist, Ardyn is a tragic figure consumed by vengeance after centuries of betrayal and abandonment.
The Dawn of the Future offers a deep exploration of his pain and humanity. He is no longer just a villain but a man shaped by the injustice of the gods and his cursed immortality. Rather than being destroyed, Ardyn chooses redemption. He abandons his hatred and embraces peace, allowing his true self to emerge. He survives, not as a monster, but as a man who has finally found rest within himself.

Gladiolus Amicitia
Gladio remains the stalwart Shield of the King, loyal to Noctis through every trial.
In this timeline, he supports Noctis’s decision to reject the path of sacrifice. Gladiolus continues to serve as a warrior and protector, leading with strength and honor. He survives the conflict and remains a dependable, grounded figure, still watching over his king and his sister with unwavering dedication.

Ignis Scientia
Blinded in the original game while trying to protect Noctis, Ignis continues to serve as the group’s tactician and voice of reason.
In The Dawn of the Future, his loyalty and wisdom help guide Noctis toward a better future. Despite his blindness, Ignis sees more clearly than most, and his insight proves invaluable. He survives, continuing his role as Noctis’s most trusted advisor and friend, now part of a future built on hope rather than duty.

Prompto Argentum
Prompto confronts his origins as a Magitek test subject and struggles with questions of identity and worth.
In the alternate story, he accepts the truth of his past and finds strength in the love and acceptance of his friends. His growth is one of self-acceptance and courage. Prompto survives and matures into a more confident version of himself, living not in the shadow of his past, but in the light of his own choices.

Iris Amicitia
Often seen in the background during the main game, Iris steps into a more active role in the broader world.
In The Dawn of the Future, she continues to develop as a protector and fighter, determined to help restore peace in her own way. While not a central figure in the novel, it’s clear she survives and grows into a strong, independent woman, respected not just as Gladio’s sister, but as a leader in her own right.

Aranea Highwind
Once a mercenary Dragoon of the Niflheim Empire, Aranea becomes a fierce defender of the people after the empire collapses.
Her expanded role in The Dawn of the Future highlights her strength, independence, and moral clarity. She leads efforts against the Starscourge, protecting civilians and standing up against divine injustice. Aranea survives, continuing to fight for those without power, and emerges as a symbol of resilience and resistance.

Cor Leonis
Known as “The Immortal,” Cor is a legendary warrior and one of the last true Kingsglaive loyal to Lucis.
Although more of a supporting character in the main game, Cor’s presence in The Dawn of the Future reflects the lasting legacy of strength, loyalty, and leadership. He plays a key role in stabilizing the realm during the crisis, serving as a mentor to both Noctis and the next generation of warriors. Cor survives and continues to protect Lucis, not just as a fighter, but as a living symbol of honor and endurance.

Final Fantasy XV: The Dawn of the Future is more than just an alternate ending it’s a reimagining of fate itself. It gives every major character a second chance: a chance to live, to heal, to grow, and to love. Instead of being defined by sacrifice and prophecy, these characters are allowed to choose their own destinies.

This story offers the closure many fans hoped for, where the heroes we grew to love are no longer martyrs to a broken world, but survivors who rebuild it.
