As someone who played FFVII multiple times I still feel like it was worth doing. I remember being quite enamored as a kid with Midgar and curious of many details of it and the game made good job fleshing it out.

Overall I really enjoyed playing the game, but there's also some notable faults that soured the experience. The fights were really good, I loved the characterization of the characters for the most part. For the most part the game felt quite meaningful.

I especially want to applaud SquareEnix for their level design, while it came across as somewhat repetitive within the scope of each theme (and they certainly could have done a better job there), it still had quite a significant level of complexity in its puzzles. A notable detail about the levels is that they're very long and perhaps too long. That's also why they ultimately feel very repetitive while still having complexity and some variety.

There's however a sense of that they might have used the level design and side quests to artificially pad out the game as these could be quite long. Ultimately they didn't persist as long that I got upset at their length but they were certainly skirting the limits of my paitence.

I actually love the battles, which I didn't expect. While the regular enemies are mostly boring fodder, they become more complex and dangerous toward the later part of the game. The boss monsters offers a wealth of complexity and many battles are like puzzles in of themselves on how you're meant to defeat them efficiently. Just like levels, many battles are quite long, but if you have good strategy, you can in theory clear battles quite quickly too. Many enemies require a mix of physical attacks and magic to be defeated. However the battles are a bit soured by the fact that you can't easily utilize your magic due to waiting on ATB to fill. If you're an OG player, you might think "so what, that was the case in the original game too", but the ATB in this game isn't a turn timer, but rather a bar that fills up while the battle is going actively around your characters. You're required to defend or attack while also keeping track of ATB filling up and planning elemental attacks. Often you don't have access to important magic or items when you really need to and those moments are incredibly frustrating.

Anyway I really enjoyed the game. It's what I've been playing for roughly a week now and overall I think it exceeds expectations. Is it worth 80 euros though? I don't think so. Considering the game is shorter than Final Fantasy was back when I grew up, it should cost the same or even less than 60 Euro as it did back then in my opinion. Thankfully I won the game as a prize and therefore I didn't have to pay for it. However now I'm eager for Rebirth and I will probably buy Rebirth as soon as it comes out on Steam too.
