I could write you a long review but honestly, here's what you need to know.

1. JRPG - It's old skool. Turn based. Think Final Fantasy.
2. It's anime. Yup. The art is overall pretty solid.
3. It doesn't take itself seriously. This is the game that really is mostly fan service to all of us diehards who love this crap.
4. You will save the world from an evil Godcat. I can't make this ♥♥♥♥ up.

Is it best game you'll ever play? Probably not. It's fun and the price is right. If you hate any of the items above, pass on it, otherwise it's a good buy. :)

Prisoner riot killed all my guards and the emergency responders.

Prisoners dug their way to freedom with smuggled spoons from the cantina.

Undroppable soap.

11/10!

Great game. Early Access. Pretty stable. Monthly updates. It's amazing how addicting creating the perfect prison can be. Definately recommend this game!

UPDATE: I can't honestly recommend this game *at this time* and had to change my review. Core issue? Lack of updates and a host of excuses from the developer. It's a fun game, it can be much better, and honestly the mods are about all that holds it together still if that. I suggest waiting until it gets out of beta and/or the developer gets it together. I still stand by the rest of my review but just keep this main part in mind.

---

First I want to start off by saying this is a beta review and everything in it may be subject to change as the game is completed. Given how many folks are picking it up, I thought a mini review would be useful!

The Good
- Unlimited planets to explore and build on
- Insane number of decoration items for your builds as well as block types, colors, etc
- Pretty much everything you like abou Terraria is here... but in SPACE!
- Mod friendly! Mostly. If you play single player mods work wonderfully. If you play multiplayer... not always so.
- It's $15. That's the cost of a movie. Play it for a few hours and you've already broke even on your entertainment value. :)

The Bad
- Your spaceship is tiny. I've ran a character from start to finish [top tier gear] using only my ship but it required very, very good space management and I had to skip some things to make it all work, like expansive storage. Since this game is mod-friendly, you can simply get a mod to let you edit your ship [you cant by default] or replace it with a different ship [also a mod] -- future versions promise upgradable ships so hopefully this con goes away
- Planet tracking. There is none. Want to know where you've been? Keep paper and pencil handy. The game gives you no way to know. You *can* set your homeworld which lets you basically bookmark a single planet but... you can also easily reset your home world accidently and your base is lost forever.
- Tier progression [1-10] isn't quite as linear as you'd think. The first few are but the second half can be cleared out incredibly fast getting to the top tier stuff. This *will* change in final as they take out the placeholders for crafting tier advancement. Of course, once you get to X sector you can go to level 5-10 planets and just go find high level items... but I digress.
- Monsters are a bit meh. After you've seen the same monsters just in different colors a hundred times it gets a bit boring
- Quests aren't in yet other than the tutorial so the game "story" doesnt really exist. Same with bosses as there are only 4 currently.
- Money goes from incredible sparse at first to a joke later in the game when you have a refinery and more pixels [the ingame currency] than you know what to do with. Said item can be gotten fairly early on as well which just adds insult to injury.
- Mob AI is not that bright and/or block placement is a bit too lenient. Want to avoid a monster or poke safely through a hole at a boss? Surround them in blocks. It's really that easy and with the fluid and fast block placement of 2x2 blocks [default size] it takes literally nothing to do. This facilitates "world raiding" once you open up X Sector to immediately find level 10 planets and bombard through them to find good loot in chests on the surface or in buildings. This is on the "may not ever be fixed" list.

The Ugly
- Player wipes. Its beta and this still happens and is expected to continue tho they are working to lock that in. Not a huge deal for me but for many it is so be forewarned.
- The game often feels disjointed with so many planets and no real attachment to any of them. A good number of players simply live in their ships. Add in planet-losing bugs and you can probably guess why tho those are getting shored up quickly. Having no idea of where you've been makes it hard to "come home" again and turns every planet into a random faceless stranger that you really dont care about after you've finished looting it.
- Inventory management is a nightmare when you have 30 colors of dirt and 10 types of sand.
- Bugs. It has to be said. While the game is pretty stable and bugs are fairly low, the ones you will find are fairly bad. This should improve over time as the game progresses into its next stages.

Hopefully you find this helpful. I could write a novel on this game as it features so much but I'll leave you this list for now. If Chucklefish can manage to shore up the gameplay and solidify the core components, Starbound will be a solid game at release. If you want to play a fully working, fully implemented, no bugs version... wait until it gets out of early access. As for me, I've got aliens to kill!

It's Minecraft in 2D. That's what most folks would immediately tell you about Terraria. The thing is, that's not a bad thing! I would say while calling it 2D Minecraft is valid, the one area Terraria not only holds its own, but far surpases, is in content. There are exponentially more crafting items, monster types, and overall "stuff" than MC. I played the heck out of this game and can easily recommend it to anyone. Also, give the very-often sales for this game, chances are you will be able to pick it up for $5 or less which is a steal for a game you can easily dump 100+ hours into.

Pretty solid city building game. There are still some bugs tho as many reviewers pointed out which is sad given that this isn't one of the billion "early access' [read: paid beta] games that seem to be overtaking Steam these days. Yes I had some crashes, some really odd villager behavior, etc but overall it is still a solid game. The only real problem I have with it [aside from the bugs which I'm sure will get fixed with time] is that having a "flat" tech tree with all buildings open at once... really gives you not a lot to strive for. There also sadly are no building upgrades aside from upgrading a wood house to a stone house which seems like a missed opportunity given the detail and thought put into this game and its systems.
