Back in 2012 I started playing dwarf fortress even sneaking it onto my highschool computer using a flash drive. Since then Ive been playing dwarf fortress and having it as a backup game to play wherever I go having even played it on international flights. This games density is incredible paired with the fact it plays off a flash drive and its download was merely 30 seconds is a testament to the magic of this game. Dwarf fortress is THE management simulator. The only game where I can track the life of a goblin as it spends the formative years of its life weaving troll wool only to be conscripted as a spearman and sent to a new upstart fortress (mine), raid said fortress and die to a falling cobalt boulder trap.
As for this new release, Hell yes. The future of this fortress is bright. Sick tunes and some great art work combined with the new UI should help a ton. The UI still needs some work but these things they do take time.
So far my only hiccup is I cant rebind mousewheel / layer change but Ill update this review as strike the earth.

What it lacks in the depth of its sister total war games it makes up for in endless replay-ability. Ultimately all gripes boil down to "Damn I want this game to be EVEN BETTER." Theres drama every time a DLC is released because of how hungry people are for this or that thing which should show you how unhealthy of an obsession this game can suck you into. Fun to play despite siege battles, the occasional funky mechanic and neutered horde mechanics but I still keep playing it. Original game goes on sale regularly (75% at time of writing) so does this game (66% currently) and honestly, ~45 dollars is worth every penny.

Has potential. Very surface level in terms of depth. (Though not literally I guess) Good time dump while I wait for that Dwarf fortress update that's coming in. This game gets far more regular updates it seems so kudos for that.

I dont often write reviews about games but I want a badge so here I go.
Overall, I would say this is a good game. There is a gigantic amount of content and it updates regularly enough that playing it after a while is always new. The best parts about the game are developed well enough that even without DLC its plenty fun to enjoy.
Thats where the real drawback is. The titanic amount of DLC. Most DLC is great and could be considered important for the primary playing of the game. The fourty dollar price tag is fair but in the eventual future I can see the dynasty starter pack deal turning into the main game for the same pricetag. Its starting to get older on the years. I mean it came out six years ago. So if you are late to the party I could wager in the next few years better deals involving more of the DLC will be coming out.
If you want to get into the genre of grand strategy CK2 is quite good for that. If the sheer amount of DLC is keeping you at bay just buy the packs on sale (or just the base game, I write this as the base game is ten dollars and good starting pack is 28~) and you get far more content for your buck.
All in all. Its good actually. Long time coming but good.

Do you like Making money? Do you like cute anime girls? How about Cute anime girls making money? So much money they become a monopoly and proceed to climb their way to the one percent? How about if their best friends are a loanshark fairy that decides to stick around despite not needing too and random criminals who will do anything for a dungeon run? This here is the game for you then. Remember to pay your bills to the letter or else you go homeless.
