Starbound
This is a long but in-depth review, you've been warned, and I had a review at 800 hours but felt it needed revamped.I played around 600-700 hours of this game before i tried mods, it unlocks another world, but vanilla is still obviously insanely good. To put it simply, this game is what everyone says, "Terraria in space", except its not they're very different. Even tho Starbound is my favorite game, terraria as some one-ups on chucklefish's crowned jewel. Those are mainly boss battles and sheer amount of unique items. I'd say it's more like 2D No Man's Sky, but lets get to the pros and cons, and in no specific order ranking.

Pros:
  • Gorgeous pixel graphics
  • Infinite universe
  • Almost all of the game is procedurally generated, including... (in depth on these later)
    -Planets
    -Creatures(there's a few non-procedural unique creatures still)
    -Weapons(same case as creatures)
    -Races/Species of humanoids
-End-game Vaults(No in depth, you'll want the surprise)
  • Great movement system
  • Amazing lore and history
  • Great boss battles
  • Otherworldly (pun intended) soundtrack
  • Incredible combat system
  • Diverse planet types (examples later)
  • Colony/City building
-With fun quest systems for your tenants!
  • Good character customization
  • Can explore other ships and space stations
  • Can customize own ship and create stations as well
  • Awesome modding community with some godly mods
-Link of my collection for you to pick through!
    https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1434388647
  • Decent crafting system
  • Insanely good mining
  • Seemingly ENDLESS fun and possibilities!
-I haven't found the end or anything close to it with 1,700 hrs

Cons:
  • Boring ass story(to me at least(will elaborate later))
  • Probably the worst publishers you could ask for (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥)
  • Dead game update wise (fault of publisher not developers)

Procedural Generation

Planets
Starbound has some of the best procedural generation I've ever seen. The planets for instance, are completely randomized except for some random towns/cities/dungeons/etc that all are different size and order as far as dungeon tunnels/paths and city building orders, but for the most part the same. However, there is a big variety on types of towns/cities/dungeons/etc depending on species. speaking of species, every humanoid race is randomly created, which makes the game all the more endless, it's almost impossible to find two identical humanoids, I don't think I ever have.

Creatures/Weapons
The creatures all have different body part collections that are randomly chosen from depending on creature size and type. The creatures are then randomly colored and (in the older versions of Starbound) are given random powers and abilities. There's a mod the brings it back that's in my collection, but here's the specific link https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1595801436

As far as weapons go its the same as the weapons have a large collection to pick parts from depending on the type of weapon it is. In my mods obviously there's many mods that increase the procedural generation of the game farther, most of said mods are by Annuschka, with mods like AnTiHair, AnTiVegetation, and AnTiMonster.

Planet Types
There are many and I don't want to spoil the wonder of exploration by giving every type, instead I'll list a few to give a sense on the variety.
  • Toxic ocean planets with islands here and there
  • Calm earth-like planets
  • Scorched planets with apocalyptic vibes as you scavenge the dead civilizations and fight raiders/bandits

Story
The missions in this game are very fun and the boss battles simple yet challenging. The part i dislike is the poinless scavenger hunt to get to each main mission, it's incredibly tedious and dull. However, each mission was beautifully crafted and gives a lot of lore. The stories are one of the few things not procedurally generated at all however, so repeating them can get dull. There aren't many missions either, so it's a very short main story, and sadly half of it is a scavenger hunt.

Poop ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Publishers
There has been one update in the last few years, and its a relatively new game with a lot planned and a devoted developer team with a love for their beautiful indie game. However Chucklefish wasn't paying them, so sadly I don't know if we'll ever get official updates again. At least there's a giant modding community with MANY great mods.

Conclusion
Theres a LOT more that I could've said, but I didn't want to ruin the surprise or make this run on longer than it has, but I wouldn't have been happy with a review any shorter. Like i said before, if you buy this game with the promise of space Terraria, it's not that, Terraria is a lot more epic fighting than this game, this game is more like 2D No Man's Sky with Terraria's block system. I can't express my love for this game though, nor can I recommend it enough. But enough talk, take my word for it and have fun and I hope this review helped! If you have any questions feel free to ask!
