I otherwise like this game, but having to update it every five minutes is simply annoying.

It's like if Factorio were 3D and if Astroneer was actually good.

Do you want a Doom game where the Doom Slayer, who has always been notoriously fast, is incredibly slow compared to his enemies? How about a Doom game where the notoriously bad ass Doom Slayer is near incapacitated whenever a zombie looks at him cross? Want a Doom game where the weapons feel about as impacting as Nerf guns? If you answered "yes" to these questions then Doom Eternal is for you!

This game is great and is currently one of my favorites to play, but there are some things you should know before purchasing. I'll try to illustrate this with a "bad", and counter with a "good":

The bad: There are very, very few maps.

The good: The developers are highly involved with the continuing development of this game. One can easily expect more maps as time progresses. As it stands, the current maps are pretty good, so there's also that.

----------

The bad: The player base has a lot of really toxic, whiny, ragey, edgelords. I got vote kicked from a server because I triggered a bunch of people by making fun of them for saying racist stuff. It was funny to me, but illustrates what sort of people you can expect to find in this game.

The good: There are still great people in the game, and they're not too incredibly hard to find. Also, the developers added a feature that allows you to quickly and easily mute other players. It makes the chat less cringey to glance at.

----------

The bad: There is a steep learning curve. If you go into this game expecting to be an utter badass, you're going to have a bad time. I read someone else's review and they referred to the game as "rage-inducing". I think this is a good term.

You're going to die, a lot! And there may be times when you're unsure of what exactly went wrong, which makes it difficult to learn, which in turn makes it very frustrating when you're first starting out.

The good: Practice really does make perfect . . . or it makes better anyway. Don't jump around on different weapons too much at first. Pick one and stick with it for quite a while. As you learn that particular weapon's speed, reach, and damage you'll find yourself with more and more assists and eventually more and more kills. It becomes quite satisfying.

Also in this process, you'll naturally pick up other useful stuff like placement, movement, and blocking. Your whole game will get better and you'll feel comfortable trying out new weapons.

----------

The bad: Hit detection seems to very rarely not work properly. There are times you'll swear you should've hit the opponent and times where the opponent's blade goes straight through your head with no result.

The good: It really is rare. Also, I say again, the developers are actively still working on this game. I expect it will only get better and better when it's already pretty solid.

----------

The bad: The horses seem very, very broken. There will be countless times when you're just walking along and then BOOM, instant death with the sound of galloping followed. They're fast and they can one-shot you.

The good: There is a counter to them. Health in this game works on a "stand back and suck your thumb for a moment" sort of way. Stay out of action long enough, and you begin to recover health. It's to my understanding that horses do not get this benefit. So, horses can be chipped down and there's really nothing the rider can do about it.

The way I see it, as more players catch on to this and get better and better at dealing damage to cavalry, the horses won't feel so broken.

----------

So that's about it, I think. It's all the points I can think of at the moment anyway. Overall, I really enjoy this game and recommend.

I wanted to like this game. I really, really wanted to like this game. It's got an awesome art style and cool soundtrack. The problem is that it seems to be a glitchy at times. The underground sections are a pure nightmare in terms of game stability. Also, if you do decide to buy this game anyway, feel glad there's a wiki out there for it. The tutorial is vague as hell.

I requested a refund today on this game, but I'll probably come back and take a look at it 6 months from now and see if the community is making any commentary on whether the developers decided to fix it up or not. Until that happens though, save your money, trust me!

You know what's frustrating? When you buy a game that is both no fun and broken. Like, even if the game was consistent/stable, it would still suck. It's a minor annoyance at best.

You know what else if frustrating? When you buy a game that is stable, but no fun. At least the devs created something that is playable, but it just isn't your cup of tea. Minor annoyance.

You know what is so infernally frustrating? When you buy a game that would be just utterly, outstandingly fun if it weren't broken as hell! Major, angering annoyance.

Welcome to Wreckfest!

Right, so the first thing you'll notice about this game is just how damn lovely it looks. It really is quite a sight to behold. The next thing you'll likely note is the controls, well, feel nice at first . . . we'll come back to this . . .

The physics are great and makes for a visually exciting environment to play in as piles of tires get tossed through the air when you or some other driver runs into them, and when cars collide with one another or other solid objects in the world. The paint and car pieces flying about while the soft body physics engine sees to it that the damage is displayed in a very remarkable way. It's very captivating.

The tracks have good layouts. Yeah, every now and then you'll have to do a boring old oval track, but thus far, in my progress anyway, they're few and far between.

Now, back to the controls. They started off perfectly. In my first 10 or so races nothing changed with them. The car would accelerate at the same rate, brake at the same rate consistently, turn, etc. Then after race 11 or so, weird things started happening. The car would make a turn at 80 kpm, and the very next lap would fly dramatically towards the outside barrier on the same turn at 50 kpm. This has been happening a lot, where it will feel like suddenly a turn gets bored and, just for funsies, develops a gravitational pull that would make Jupiter jealous. I seriously have no other way to describe it, but at first it felt like my inputs effected the turning of the car, because, you know, that's what driving a car is. Now it feels like the actual track's turns themselves will sometimes effect the car because . . . reasons? And it seems to come and go. I might glide around one turn and feel like a bad ass while doing so, and 2 laps later that same has transformed into ice that still looks exactly like dirt, causing me to very dramatically slide towards the outside.

Other weirdness has happened too, like bumping a car or bumping into a car and us getting stuck together. Or me driving down the track, mostly alone as I'm very far out in front, and then suddenly something invisible will spin my car out (usually sending me into a barrier) or completely flip my car.

Speaking of being in the front of the pack, these oddities: possesed turns, poltergeists flipping my car, cars suddenly turning into super glue upon contact; tend to happen when I'm in first or second place. I seriously want an answer to this: Is this how the devs decided to make the game "more challenging"? By making it to where if you win, the game just ♥♥♥♥♥ the bed on you?

This game is bad ass, but plagued with some real problems. If the game sucked and was broken, I'd shrug my shoulders and be on my way. But no, the devs had to make a game with a ton of potential, but we end up with a buggy mess. I look forward to patches that may fix these issues. If that happens, I'll change the thumbs down to a thumbs up.

*POST EDIT*

Okay, so the truth of it is that despite my complaints on this game, I did also give it a lot of praise, and I cannot stop playing it. (My kids really like it too, at least the demolition derby part of it anyway.)

So I learned that if you ride the ever loving hell out of the brakes, you'll usually execute turns decently enough to win. As I first started developing this tactic, I really didn't like it. I felt like I was being punished for going fast in a racing game. It felt counter-intuitive. However, the more I play the more it instead feels like you just have to very deliberate in your driving. It's easy to think you'll quickly be over taken by having to slow your car to a crawl every time you go around a bend, but I'm still able to come in first most of the time doing so. There are things that still feel wonky about this game, but overall it's good enough to keep me coming back.

With that said, I've changed my rating from a thumbs down to a thumbs up. Play it, just expect to get very well accomodated with the brake button.

Back to thumbsdown. After some patches and the game feels like a broken mess now.

Do you like longer than needed cut scenes? Do you like ham fisted quick time events? Do you like shooting the enemy in the head with a .45 ACP three times before they die? Do you like having the game be completely opaque as to what you're supposed to be doing sometimes only to at other times clearly post the objective on your screen only for you to explode as soon as you reach the objective, restarting your last check point two or three times until finally you no longer randomly explode when you reach the objective? If so, this is the game for you!

But, it's not for me. Well . . . there are times I feel it's not for me.

I want to like this game. I've wanted to like this game since I first heard about it. COD going back to it's roots? A new WWII COD game?! This sounds amazing!

And there are some things I like about it. The controls are tight, the graphics are completely lovely, and aside from the aforementioned randomly exploding and seemingly bullet proof nazis that appear every now and then, the combat is nice. But, the things I did mention does get in the way of the game being fun. I can be going through blasting nazis in the head, watching their helmets pop off their heads as they crumble onto the ground when suddenly, one of them that got blasted in the melon, now with bloody face and a head with no helmet, gets up and starts shooting at me. I'm all like, "What the ♥♥♥♥?! Why am I taking damage from the right? I cleared the right!"

Then there he is, nazi with his brain matter in all places but inside his skull accurately shooting me with a K98. Either there are things about German soldiers that I simply didn't know about, or this game has some problems.

It doesn't happen every time, but it has happened enough for me to take note of it ever time I've played. My other gripes, like the cut scenes and the quick time events are annoying, but I could live with them. However, mixing those elements in with one in every ten or so enemies getting back up after being fed a hot lead casserole (Us yanks love our bullets and we love our casserole . . . 'MURICA!) makes the game difficult for me to want to proceed.

Which, by the way, I probably will proceed. It may become to absurd and therefore frustrating for me to finish this game, but I will definitely try. Like I said, there are definitely good things about this game, but there are other things that feel lazy and unpolished. It's too bad that Steam only offers a thumbs up or a thumbs down. I would more or less give this a thumb sideways with the hopes that they would eventually release a patch to fix some of this up. Then I would change it to a thumbs up, but for now, it'll have to maintain a thumbs down.

[POST EDIT]

Got to the tank part. It is a broken mess. Stay away from this game.

It's a great game. Maybe not for everyone, it's teamplay heavy. If you're used to being the lone bad ass in a game, racking up kill after kill under your own merit, this isn't for you.

A game that is not without its tremendous flaws, but a good game nonetheless.
