I have a strong interest in FPS games, they are by far one of my favorite gaming genres since being mesmerised by the likes of Goldeneye as a child and spending countless upon countless hours with such games like Halo 1-3 and the Call of Duty franchise particularly COD 4. I honestly believe that Doom Eternal sits at the top of the FPS genre and I want to try and explain why.

Within the Doom community there appears to be so much discourse in regards to which is the “true Doom” game. I have played every Doom title at some point of my gaming life and enjoyed them all on numeorus devices, even Doom 3, Doom Eternal is both the pinnacle and apex of the Doom Franchise. Back in 2016 Bethesda tasked themselves with the gamble of “reimagining” the Doom franchise, there wasn’t much hope before its release, details, gameplay, previews were scarce and as I recall the review embargo lifted on the day of release which is never a good sign, however, to most people’s surprise the finished product was a very strong, confident title that completely surpassed everybody’s expectations. Its sequel however, Doom Eternal, takes the gameplay of predecessor and cranks it up to a thousand notches.

Whilst 2016’s Doom focused on being a solid shooter in a world of already solid shooters, Eternal instead focused on frantic frenzied combat that encourages the player to take risks, be more aggressive and experimental and learn from every death.

There are some Doom purists and critics who think the gameplay is too fast, too difficult and see Eternal is some bastard child of a franchise that should have been left alone a long time ago. The biggest criticism from fans towards this sequel appears to be the over use of platforming in certain sections of the levels in the main game as well as the DLC, criticising that it’s too difficult or just plain unesscessary. personally I found the “platforming” sections irritating at first, I won’t lie, on my initial play through of Eternal but with plenty of practice it becomes second nature and quite enjoyable, as previously stated once you understand the rhythm of the game you feel like a demon-obliterating, parkour enthusiast duke of of destruction.

I say ♥♥♥♥ the criticism, most of the critique from the community appears to be grasping at straws, particularly the “video essays” on YouTube.

Eternal is an absolutely incredible game and fully deserves to be in the greatest FPS hall of fame. The music, complete absurdity, environments, gameplay and overall fun factor are absolutely off the charts, once you get into the real meat of the game and the combat encounters become more difficult you realise that the each encounter is a sort of puzzle that once you have figured it out becomes an absolute joy to play. I have played Eternal many times and it’s DLC, the Ancient Gods, and I wholeheartedly reccomend this title to anyone who enjoys or has a mild interest in the FPS genre, now go and RIP N TEAR!!
