I normally just leave ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reviews but I'm gonna be serious for a moment

This is a very, very promising first chapter and a nice introduction to the game. I have very, very few complaints, and the ones I do have are very minor. If this is an indication of things to come, HST could have something very special here.

Visually, it's a very nice looking game with an instantly recognizable SCP art style, the facility, the gear, the characters, it's all thematically on point. Several areas gave me similar vibes to Area 12 from SCP: 5K. Animations are smooth, the in game UI itself is nice and easy to read, and doesn't take up too much space. I think the inventory UI could be improved, personally, but that's definitely low priority this early into the games life. It's not bad, I think it could just stand to get a facelift.

I like that the developers seem to understand that player freedom is a good thing, and as such, the first chapter can be approached stealthily, or aggressively, or both, and you're not really punished for choosing which approach to take. Exploring will land you enough supplies that you can comfortably fight everything if you want. I've seen people state they think the devs can't decide if this is meant to be a stealthy game, or an action game, but I think they just wanted to give you control over your experience.

On the note of stealth, however, I am brought to one of my complaints, which is the music. The music itself is fantastic, but during certain parts of the chapter, the background song will either restart, or will jump in intensity massively, oftentimes leading me to believing I'd been spotted by enemies, even though I was still completely undetected. It put me on edge a few times during a very specific area that was already fairly tense. It was never enough of an issue to cause me to make mistakes but I could definitely see it causing issues for people who experience high levels of anxiety or stress during stealth gameplay.

The game features several puzzles and a hacking minigame, but they are quick and easy to interact with and solve, never overstaying their welcome at any point. There's even a toggle that allows you to hold buttons for quick time events for people who don't want to break their fingers spamming their keyboards/controllers (I spammed, but it's a very nice QoL feature to have anyway)

Overall, I still think this was a really, really good experience, and it's definitely worth the pricetag. The story is approachable and understandable even for people who don't know a thing about SCP. Audio and text logs can be found in across the game world for those interested in more lore, and contain relevant information to the game itself, whereas most developers just loredump irrelevant backstories and details that don't fit into their stories.

Please give this game a shot, these devs clearly have a lot of love for the project and it'd be a real shame to see it not get the attention it deserves.

As others have stated there's currently quite a bit of jank because the games been out for a couple of hours in the space of these reviews. It's very early access and I personally think it could have used a bit more time in the oven before releasing as of the time I wrote this.

Going into an EA title, you're likely going to experience the jank and there's understandably going to be some problems. I don't believe the game should be written off entirely just yet, though. I still recommend it as once a few updates drop and we start seeing things get fixed, there's a really cool concept here that isn't touched on much (horror themed tactical shooter) and I want to support the niche community, because it's such a cool genre to play in.

The things I want to give praise to are the environmental scares, as well as certain props, being seemingly random each run. I've done a handful of runs on the same mission now and I've been delightfully spooked by a whole bunch of different things happening. It's really fun not knowing what's going to grill your cheese mid mission, on top of that, I've had to change my routing through missions and have had access to more or less cover in specific areas which while a small change, is enough for me at least.

When I first saw Contain announced, I was a bit worried we'd be forced into a playstyle of fussing around with gimmicky devices and teams would have to lug all sorts of equipment around, so I'm also very happy to see that your scanner is your primary tool, everyone has it by default, and you don't need specific equipment each run. Everything you need is given to you by default or in specific mission types.

My biggest and pretty much my only personal issue is that enemies seem to spot you through walls and will absolutely try to unload magazine after magazine into you through them, so it's likely you'll get pre-fired quite a bit in the current build. This is a pretty big issue so I'm assuming the devs are focusing on fixing this as fast as they can. It's not quite as bad as it could be, as the game seems to have regenerating health for the player, so you can sit in cover and heal if needed, but it's still not a good look.

Customization for weapons and gear is pretty good too, it's very reminiscent of the system used in Ground Branch, although not quite as open as that, it still allows for some pretty unique builds so you can really make the weapons you want to make, within reason. Equipment customization for your operator is a bit limited at the moment, but with later updates I feel it'll be very nice too.

Contain definitely needs some more work so I won't say people leaving negative reviews are wrong or unreasonable, they're not, but if you have any love for tactical spooky shooties, I'd say definitely keep your eye on it over time, because there's some good potential here.

Absolutely fantastic game start to finish. Extremely clever puzzles, great music, and a very intense but immersive atmosphere that'll have you edge of your seats for most of the game. Best enjoyed as a blind experience, it's really satisfying when you figure the puzzles out together.

Do yourself and your best mate a favour and don't miss this.

Game is fun so far. Few issues, as expected from an F2P indie release, I think if the performance can be fixed up (game has terrible FPS drops for some hardware) there's a pretty solid game here.

Gunplay is fun, simple squad command system is based, and the MP5 is beautiful, which is the most important thing.

Pretty hard to complain too much, when it's literally free.
