Early Access Review
it should be illegal to make a game this good. every time an update comes out i think that the game has reached max potential and then the NEXT update comes out and blows the previous out of the water. genuinely one of the best games i've ever played.

I do not respect this game. no one should respect this game. its barrier of entry is huge and has so many annoyances that make modding the game damn near required. The humor and design is all poop and gore and outdated references for its own sake. I have 200 hours and that number is sure to grow.

I really, really, really wanted to like this game, but unfortunately, I can't recommend it.

The game is way too damn slow, and all the puzzles are pretty brain-dead and mostly just require brute force. What little plot there was wasn't very enticing, and the gameplay loop is almost entirely made up of "look how creepy THIS train car is!" with the occasional skin-deep button-pressing puzzle. Most of the cool and fun parts of the game you can actually see in the trailer, which ironically makes watching the trailer the best part about this game. I don't want to claim it's *bad* by any means, there's clearly a lot of work and passion put into it, but you really aren't missing much by passing this by.

(and in case anyone was wondering, my playtime is all it took to get both the bad and good ending.there is a 3rd ending, but I didn't bother with it.)

this is my favourite game of all time, and its not even close. I didn't even *HAVE* a favorite game before playing Celeste, and yet it still surpassed everything else within just 3 hours of playing it.

Yooka-Laylee, while it fails as a sequel, still has enough merit to be worth a try. This game has many flawed design choices, but at its core, it's a pretty fun spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. Within the context of its release, I can see why so many people bagged on it so hard, but we're well past that now, and I think it's time we gave this game a chance.

Let's start with the good. The game looks great, exactly how'd you expect a modern BK to. There were a couple of props that looked a little off, but nothing huge. And of course, the music is outstanding, as you'd expect from Kirkhope. The worlds had great, varied themes that felt original and unique (except for maybe the ice world) and were plenty of fun to explore and platform around. Almost all of the challenges had good pacing and never overstayed their welcome. The characters are very well written. Yooka and Laylee are perfect stand-ins for Banjo and Kazooie, and most of the other characters were fun too. It's just plain and simple fun.

Unfortunately, that's all I can give for praise. There's a lot of design flaws and just an overall lack of polish that prevents this game from being amazing. For starters, the enemy placement and variety is horrible, usually just a mix of about 5 enemies of the 4 generic types, places at seemingly random to fill empty space. They have very basic patterns, making them simple to defeat, and can easily just be ran around, anyways. The boss fights, while I found a couple of them somewhat fun or interesting, are mostly boring, dragged out too long, jank, and frustrating. The levels are way too big for their own good. It takes forever to get from one point to another, with the only means of faster travel being Yooka's roll move, which has a meter for some ungodly reason, along with the rest of special moves you learn throughout the adventure. I can't think of any good reason to have this meter, since none of the moves that consume it would not even come close to overpowered if they could be used infinitely, with exception to the fly move. But since almost none of the moves (including the fly move) use enough energy for the meter to be drained completely in regular use; it only acts as a limiter on the roll, which consumes it fairly quickly, which is annoying because, again, the worlds are way too big. Speaking of world size, the world expansion mechanic may sound good on paper, but it doesn't add much to the experience and is more limiting than anything. With the exception of the first world, all of the expansions are really small, which is just an annoyance when you find one of the 2 pagies that can only be accessed by leaving the world, or the world before the expansion is so small that there's almost nothing to do in them. Even with the first world, which didn't have the previous problems, I found it annoying that some paths just don't lead anywhere because I haven't expanded the world yet, and after expansion I had no idea where the new content was added, leading to me having to re-explore the entire level. Now, let's address some pagies that everyone talks down on; Rextro and Kartos. They're in every world, and their gimmick is the same each time. For Rextro, you have to find his token in each world, and then you get to play a boring, slippery feeling, and way too long "arcade game" not once, but twice. After you play it the first time, you have to beat Rextro's high score in a second run to get another pagie. This is really annoying since the games are mind numbing and generally take over 5 minutes, and for every single high score, I would've qualified to beat it the first time around, but you have to play it once to get the second pagie. As for Kartos, I didn't think he was as bad as people thought. It was slightly jank, and a little repetitive, but it was at least somewhat enjoyable. The tracks had a good amount of variety to them, especially in world 4. Speaking of, I think world 4 got way more hate than it deserved, too. I didn't find it empty, the RNG based games weren't all bad, and I didn't think it was too bogged down by slot machines, which is what other reviewers found. Now for some nitpicks. The inanimate objects with physics feel really jank. The pagies that have you pushing an object into a certain space feel like you're fighting against the physics engine, and are incredibly frustrating. When solid object break apart, the chunks still have physics until after they fade away, which heavily limits movement in that area for a few seconds. I'm gonna blame the physics on the unity engine, but I can't say for sure if that's what caused it. The pause menu annoys me, too. Each option in the menus have a character attached to them, just like B-K. But in this game, the characters are all randomized, EXCEPT for the ones on the main menu. The inconsistency really throws me off. Also, when you highlight each option, a voice clip of the character attached to it plays. I know this is incredibly nit-picky but in B-K, it was one noise, and Yooka does 2 each time, which was irritating. I forgot to say this so I'll just throw it on here: I felt that the butterflies were handled poorly. Yooka struggles to grab them with his tongue (along with most other things) and the way they refill both your health and energy can be frustrating since what manner you collect it in defines what bar it goes to, which isn't inherently bad, but moving around in Yooka's ball form should not be one of the ways to collect them, since it's so loose. Also it would've been nice if the butterflies would go to the other bar if the original choice was full.

Despite all the complaints I've made, Yooka-Laylee is still a fun game that's worth your time, but maybe wait for a sale. The game is by no means perfect, but it's flaws don't outweigh the enjoyment, and it's worth playing at least a little bit in order to form your own opinion. I encourage anyone who likes the genre to ignore the hate and just go into this with a clear mind. (Ironic, considering how long I made this review.)
