i like this game, and corpse party in general, but i've had this in my library for nearly two years and there are still only two playable chapters. will update this to an honest and detailed review if they ever release the full game

i haven't played this game as of late, but the memories from co op will stay with me until i die.

playing co op with a friend is what makes this game worth the buy. you will spend time trying to solve puzzles, you will spend time trying to kill each other, you may also find ways to solve puzzles that involve killing each other. malicious deaths or not, there will be lots of dying, but you won't often find yourself frustrated.

the puzzles are challenging enough that you will get stuck, but not so much that you'll be pulling your hair out.
there's lots of different block types, but you'll never feel lost. many don't need explanations either, because their appearances say a lot about what they do.

if this ever goes on sale for incredibly low, you should buy a four-pack. even if this doesn't go on sale, you should buy a copy for yourself.
if you're not convinced that you should buy this, you should know that there's an enemy that is a piece of bread. if there are two of them, they will literally try to sandwich you. they do no damage, but it's hysterical.

here's a hilarious speedrun of the entire game, including commentary from two of the devs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrML9pOg92o

i wanted this game, and bought it, because i'm a big mmorpg person. i didn't do much research before buying it on sale.

this game has horror elements. one of the main missions required me to walk through a very poorly lit parkade, where i would sometimes be pulled to the side and attacked by pitch-black, disfigured mutants. at the end i had to defeat a monster that looked like a large, muscular, quadrupedal, vampire arnold (from hey, arnold) that also spawned in an area without light. let's just say it was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ creepy, okay?
for the first few areas of the game, i made sure to frequently empty my bladder to avoid any unwanted disruptions.

i love the skill system. this isn't a game like world of warcraft where you pick your class and you're stuck with only three ways to play your character until you decide to reroll - it is completely possible to max out all skills and abilities in every section of the skill wheel. you can only have two weapons equipped at a time (not counting your auxiliary), and you have seven (plus one for auxiliary) active and passive ability slots.

the combat is very good for a tab-targeting game. from very early levels, they teach you to watch your positioning and surroundings, and that is carried throughout the rest of the game. nearly every boss has mechanics that require you to pay attention to the fight and be aware to what they will do, and some mistakes could mean you sit out for the rest of the boss. there is very little room for error, especially if you lack self-heal or healing abilities.

overall, i'm enjoying my experience so far. this game has a lot of small things that games i previously played had not offered me. i do not know what endgame consists of, but i would like to try to fill out my entire skill wheel before quitting.

beautiful, but way too short. i finished the game in about four hours. i was really disappointed, because i wanted to see more of the island, and meet more of the locals. i walked across a bridge, saw a house surrounded by pine trees, and couldn't wait to get down there, but it had turned out that i couldn't access that area.
movement is limited; there are set paths you can take, and you can see some areas you would think you could venture into, but can't. it doesn't feel very open, i never really truly felt like i was exploring (which is funny, because sometimes lili describes herself as an explorer).

there's only one boss, at the very end of the game, but he handles exactly the same as every other enemy you've beaten in the game before. defeating him was a little anti-climactic, especially since he's only the mayor, and i expected some more powerful (both politically and in strength) enemies.

this game is full of memes and references. some of the enemy profiles will give you a good chortle, as well.

the way you need to defeat enemies is unique if you use a mouse and keyboard, but if you use a controller, all battles will solely be quick-time events. i liked how, with a mouse, you actually had to pull flowers out of the ground, but with the controller, you could just press A, and i found that significantly less fulfilling.

the story is mediocre.
there is no end-game.
you cannot max all skills (to my knowledge).
there are barely any guides for this game, so it's difficult to find help for anything not related to vanity items.

overall, like many of the $10 games on steam, it's only worth buying if you can get it for at least 50% off. if you can't buy it, just go look at some screenshots - you won't be missing anything.

Early Access Review
tl;dr great game. if you have patience, buy this.

if you like games like minecraft and terraria (or even if you don't), you'll like this game.
initially i wasn't that into the idea of starbound; i debated purchasing it at full price for about two weeks before i did. i didn't have that much fun in minecraft, and i had never played terraria, so i asked some friends who had played to describe it to me. eventually i bought and downloaded it, started playing within the week, and immediately fell in love with the vanilla version.
admittedly, the vanilla version can get boring after a while - once you kill all the bosses, receive all the upgrades, mine several planets dry, and create your own village from scratch, there doesn't seem to be much left to do. but, you'd be wrong, because there's these beautiful things called mods.

i think after doing everything that you can in the original, un-modded game, it's the perfect time to download all the mods you want. there's a few sites full of fan created content (eg. nexus[www.nexusmods.com] and the chucklefish site[community.playstarbound.com]) that can extend your play time by tens of hours with new biomes, races, weapons, vehicles, mechanics, etc.
in vanilla, i played a blond ape-chick with a scroll on her back, a leeloo-style strap shirt, and who uses a massive hammer to deal damage. with mods, i'm now a chainsaw-wielding neko with fiery-red hair whose home is above the ocean on a beautiful tropical planet.
of course, you have to start over with each new character, but the entire universe (which is so massive you'd never be able to explore all of it) is shared between all your characters. don't want to fight the third boss again? that's okay; you can fly over on another character and drop a chest with whatever supplies you want.

keep in mind that this game is still being worked on, so there's a lot of room for change, but the devs actively listen to the community and consider feedback when updating. this is evidence enough for me to believe that starbound can only get better.
what's really beautiful about this game is that everyone's experiences will be different. even without mods, every planet is as unique as a snowflake (so much so that i may start likening uniqueness with starbound planets instead of snowflakes), and so are its monsters. while your friend may have gone to a tentacle planet to mine their first rubium, maybe you floated around an asteroid field for it. you'll be able to share some funny stories of your unique experiences on your journey from mining cobblestone with a matter-displacer to capturing weird-looking monsters to keep as pets.

with this game, the stars are the limit (i'm sorry i had to).

I bought this game and was very excited to play it, because I've played a couple of OverDrive's games before. This one pales in comparison. It's very informational, but not many choices and not much romance. Too short, and the ending is very abrupt.
Only get this if it's on sale and you want to know more about Japan.

rewriting this review, because i've played and read more, and now have a better understanding and appreciation of the game.

dark souls is very hard - it's not a game you can mash buttons to win. if you're reckless for even a moment, you can die to something you've killed 100 times before, and lose your progress. this has happened to me several times, and each time i've kicked myself in the ass for it.
but, the upside to the game being so hard, is that it's incredibly rewarding when you kill a boss you've been struggling with for a long period of time. that feeling of accomplishment is so few and far between in video games now, so it's also very refreshing.

to kill tougher bosses, sometimes you have to run through an area, kill the enemies, have them respawn, and repeat to grind for souls (which serve as experience points and currency). at times like this, the game can get tedious, but the more skill you have, the less you'll find yourself doing this. fortunately, the more enemies you kill, the more chance that an upgrade to your equipment will drop. most of the equipment i've worn has been looted from an enemy, rather than bought.

if you need help with a boss, you can summon other players or npcs to help you. i believe the developers predicted that the popularity of the game would drop off, and the online community would wither and die, so they implemented summon-able npcs as a pre-caution. it helps a lot - the npcs aren't stupid and they have a decent amount of strength. i defeated the moonlight butterfly without doing any damage, and letting my companion cast spells at it.

this game is recommended for people who enjoy putting their hands on hot stove elements, donning all red attire and running into a bull ranch, or walking into a texan biker bar and openly expressing their support for gay marriage and abortions .. and then after doing enough masochistic things, being rewarded with money.

Very good graphics, and a lot of fun. Different racing modes, vehicles, and difficulties make the game that much more challenging. I can't tell you how many times I've tried a race "just one more time" because I felt I messed up a certain section where I had to use a plane.
Modes include, but are not limited to: chasing down and shooting a tank while it retaliates, getting as many speed boosts as you can within a time limit, and damaging other racers with the goal of eliminating them all.

I find it especially fun to drift in places where it's not recommended just to get an extra speed boost to pass my opponents. When you start to figure out how to better your times, you can keep pushing yourself to beat others online through time trial, or cut out the middle man and challenge people directly.

Buy if you like racing games, characters from SEGA games, or Danica Patrick (because for some reason she's a playable character).

Awkward camera angles, weird controls, and lack of tutorials/information. Some stages/bosses can be tricky, because some things aren't explained (eg. the mech is invulnerable until it's getting ready to hover). Buy this if you want to support SEGA, or you enjoy nostalgia and have too much patience.
