Updated review 4/9/2021:

So I've been using OVR Toolkit since, idk, I wanna say like at least the first month of release. I had been looking for an overlay system since frankly the competing software at the time + OVRDrop just wasn't doing it for me.

I highly recommend this application for anyone who needs a little bit more than a simple overlay, wants to use multiple windows, or has some advanced needs outside of just "Place window in front of me".

There's a couple of things I want to touch on, but let me say this:

A: This application is by far the most well integrated into VR, offering both a FULL VR experience as well as an in VR experience for even non-controller users, which is really useful for folks using VR in racing sims as well as other "in-cockpit" games.

B: Fairly optimized - While I think things can get better, I have heard stuff from the developer that they are working on improving rendering lag. Mind that any overlay can add to an already existing reduction in performance as, well, that's what's going to happen when you're rendering overtop of other things. You can improve things using eco mode, as well as reducing the FPS rendering, and also it offers a custom application system, which means you can integrate things directly into the overlay (improving performance) or use the "Custom URL" app on the webstore to bring up any webpage, which still improves performance.

C: Honestly the developer(s) are super open about what they're working on, open to new ideas, and frankly just wholesome as heck.

----------------------------------

Okay, so lets get that out of the way. Here's some fun things about the application you should know:

1. The application will request for "admin mode". While this can be suspicious, it has a very logical reason - Windows. Yes! Windows itself will prevent any non-admin application from continuing to interact with the OS shell when you interact with an admin window. Say you have OBS running in admin mode, you click on it, but now it stops working. THIS APP IS CRAP! No. Its because the overlay system needs admin mode to interact with admin apps. The moment you give an admin application focus, windows will remove any interactivity from it. This is the same with Joy2Key, or any other application that handles "input", and also happens in cross-input applications like Discord (which requires admin if you use Push To Talk in some games, particularly any that are run in admin mode). No different here.

2. There is a bit of a learning curve. There's a lot you can do with the overlays that can seem either out of left field at times, but almost everything that is in the application has been a user request.

3. Honestly, I wouldn't use anything else. It has the right balance of "looks" and functionality. It doesn't have a list of gaudy unneeded animations. It's simple, quick, and getting better with future builds. I do have a feature request in to improve "keyboard" mode (aka "Sim Mode"), so hopefully those will get built.

OVRall, it's a fantastic application and worth the price to support the developer. Simple as that.
