I like the idea, but as someone whose put 1000+ hours into Rimworld, this colony simulator seems incredibly superficial by comparison. The most glaring thing that got me was the lack of research diversity. every research tree is bottlenecked by an item you must presumably find and fetch in order to go further down the tree. By the time I stopped I could see i was easily going to have all trees researched and hit that wall before ever locating even one of those items. There's no realistic option to specialize. I just throw my research points into whatever I need at a given moment.....and then everything else as well because I have a lot built up since the last time I checked progress.

I wish there was a Neutral button to select. I enjoyed the plot, but the game mechanics just were't enough to keep me interested.

I settled on giving this a thumbs up because in the end I'm still happy that I tried it. Kind of like a book or movie that you liked juuust enough to say "I'm glad I experienced this even though I don't think I'll want to read/watch it again."

Only a few hours in and I'm liking what I see. A couple things stand out already:

+ Remember zooming in on NPCs during conversations in the recent Fallout and Elder Scrolls games? They were fairly motionless and monotone. The word "bland" comes to mind. That doesn't seem to be the case here. Characters in these encounters bare more resemblance to the Outter Worlds trailers; much more animated and distinct.

- Somehow the camera controls feel sluggish yet slippery at the same time, like something heavy struggling across ice. I wonder if that's intentional or just ironic.

A great idea with mediocre execution. Still, it grows on you.

Pro's

- Good atmosphere: Reminds me of Natural Selection 2. The motion tracker reminiscent of Aliens is a nice touch.

- Ship-building is fun: Deciding your layout will greatly affect your experience.

- Progression is challenging but never feels impossible: When an infestation occurs, you always have the option to halt all activities that trigger the appearance of new hostile life, and work on clearing your ship.

- Sound/music are mostly appealing: While the main menu has obnoxious, blaring music, I found most of what I heard in-game (with volume set around 60%) to be more than acceptable. I was particularly surprised at how much atmosphere was created by the track that makes simple use of 2 repeating notes.


Con's

- Lighting: While the general lighting conditions are perfectly acceptable, the game is subject to moments of downright blinding bloom effects. On some planet surfaces the conditions are so hazy that any source of light actually lowers visibility, one of which (the harvester's built-in search light) you have no control over. Worse, this occurs even in certain parts of your own ship, where you would expect lighting to be smart and efficient.

- Clunky UI : There were quite a few examples of "workable-yet-annoying" interface, such as the slightly disorienting way the motion tracker spins the same direction you're turning instead of counter. Or the screens that scroll only by mousing to the bottom/top edges; the game doesn't seem to know that mouse-wheels exist.

- Gameplay shortcomings: Examples include 1) Your chosen corporation dictates what weapon your crew will be issued. While this weapon, like all others, can be upgraded, it seems that no matter how many different weapons you unlock, your crew will only ever be able to use that single one for the entire playthrough. 2) When you die, you take over one of your crew (clones) to continue, but you (the player) are not allowed to choose which one. This leads to specialized crew that you cloned to operate a specific module being "kidnapped" to serve as captain. 3) The little combat droids you can build to patrol your ship are operated with one of the most obtuse command interfaces I've seen in a long time.

After playing for several hours, here are my first impressions:

- The art is one of the first things you'll notice. It's done in the style of comic books, not unlike Borderlands, complete with loot-able containers having a neon green highlight of some kind. There's even a grey border around the screen to give the impression of a comic panel.

- There's also some on-screen Batman tv-esque onomatopoeia to help warn you when something is "stomp stomp stomp"ing just beyond that closed door, or when you shoot something enough to make it "blorp" into a dozen pieces.

- The second thing is the narration, presented by none other than "that Stanley Parable guy". If you enjoyed him there, you'll enjoy him here. (You can find him in the "Dungeons" series as well)

- Enemies have relatively simple behavior, with small variations. I'm more interested in the amusing things they say, both before and after they notice you.

- The sectioned off rooms/hallways in the ships you'll explore make for a fun challenge. For those of you who liked to play 'fort' as a kid, it can be enjoyable to clear out an area, then lock all the doors around it except one, and move on, saying "ok, now I have a little area of safety behind me", slowly increasing the coverage of that zone until you happen upon something dangerous, knowing you have plenty of space to work with.

- Resources are plentiful, but varied. There are ways to convert things into other things, albeit not at 1:1 efficiency, so conversion won't be profitable, but it's satisfying to have the options.
