Another year, another expansion. And with Destiny 2 Lightfall, it doesn’t disappoint.. completely.

Destiny has always had a spot in my heart since the beta of Destiny 1 back in 2014. And here I am, 9 years later still grinding the heck out of this game. It’s an amazing game. It boasts very intuitive controls and intriguing gameplay. But it's come to the point where since I’ve been playing for so long, I now have the fear of missing out on content and the season passes it offers. Which has now been a bit more forgiving with Bungie no longer “Vaulting” major expansions. That's a good thing.

Last year, Bungie released The Witch Queen, which had the new 3.0 updates of all light subclasses and a new legendary campaign. Which was a huge success with the community and myself. It brought extreme challenges for me and my fireteam, the story was phenomenal and answered many questions I had, but also made me ask new ones. It also introduced the ability to craft weapons in the game. While yes it was limited to only campaign weapons and seasonal weapons, still an amazing addition.

Fast forward to now and Bungie released Lightfall.. This expansion isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. But I do think that Lightfall is a little bit overpriced for what you’re getting. On purchase, you only get access to the campaign (which is very mediocre at best), the new Strand subclass (Despite what people say, it is a very potent and fun subclass), a new raid, and access to Season 20. That isn’t nearly as much content as Witch Queen added. PLUS Lightfall is 10 dollars more than Witch Queen was.

Price aside, I think the things that have been updated in Destiny have left a very “sweet but sour” taste in my mouth.

They have redone how the strike playlist works with a new scoring system which is nice. They have increased the difficulty of nearly every activity in the game. Which I don’t mind at all until it comes to Nightfalls. Specifically, I think that the Heist Battlegrounds on the Moon this season is going to be nearly impossible on Grandmaster difficulty. I feel extremely squishy. And I feel like I have to use an exotic primary all the time due to the 40% damage buff to red bar enemies. There is also a bug right now that the more FPS you get in the game, the more damage you take. For instance a Thresher can one hit you if you have 120 FPS but if you turn your FPS down to 30, they no longer do. This glitch has happened before and it is still extremely frustrating.

Oh and gambit is just a joke at this point. No new maps, gameplay changes or weapons.

Getting back on track, the new mod system is okay, but they did remove about 60% of all of the mods from the previous years to simplify the mod customization. Which is nice for the new players who are getting into build crafting, but it now doesn’t leave much room for creativity for the die hard build crafters like myself.

At the end of the day, I love this game. And I will support it until I die just because it has sentimental value for me. But this year's content is definitely more rocky than previous releases. I will also say that this year's campaign doesn’t really help or explain much of the story. They open way too many open ended questions with NO answers. I feel like this expansion was originally supposed to be the final DLC in the Light and Dark saga but Bungie needed more time or wanted to perfect the story. So they kinda slipped in this new planet that wasn’t originally planned and new characters almost as a filler year. I mean, the first cutscene and the last cutscene of the campaign look like they are the same cutscene. Just cut in half. Go watch it.

I still have yet to play the raid for it's not out yet but I’ll update my review once I complete it and I’ll determine whether it’s good enough to warrant buying this DLC if you think strand isn’t enough.

I hope Bungie can really make these upcoming seasons shed some light on the story and help me better understand what is going on. But gameplay and mechanics wise, buying the season pass is very much so worth it. And what better time to start playing destiny than at the beginning of a new year. Even if the story makes no sense.
