Persona 5 royal gets what makes a turn based rpg boring and says "we don't need that" turning the tried and true system on its head with '1 mores' which lets you take another turn after getting a critical hit or hitting an enemy with its weakness or baton passes which lets you give your extra turn to one of your teammates passing along some stat buffs as an extra treat. Collecting a vase array of persona for any given situation is also a treat with the hold up system that lets you either bribe the enemy to join your team or give you items/money, or gives you the chance to do an all out attack; a flashy cut scene will play as all the members of your party lay waste to the opponent.

Speaking of the party, persona 5 royal follows the legacy set by the series of having that slice of life gameplay to break up the fast paced battles.


The motto of persona 5, you see it in all the loading screens, and there's even a pop up that will relay the message. You get to choose how to spend your day but you should remember that time is limited, take your time and think about how effectively you want to spend the time you have, weather its hanging out with members of your party to build up your confidants and gain extra skills in battle, or studying, working out, or eating to build up jokers personal skills, with every decision you make its important that you think it through, and take your time.


I have played the original persona 5 on my ps3, and persona 5 royal on ps4 then again on my ps5 and can say without shadow of a doubt playing it on PC is the best way to play, the game runs at a smooth 120fps with no drops, and the loading screens have become virtually non existent. The only draw back i can see here is the use of Denuvo drm for pc's with a slower hard drive and less processing power to handle its file scans, and for the beefier computers may be disappointing to see the graphics settings being very straightforward and not up to fine-tuning. That being said persona is the type of game where the art style leans itself to not needing any crazy settings apart from resolution and resolution scale. I'm running the game on a 4k display and it looks beautiful with no jagged edges and no smudged visuals as seen on the switch.


On steam deck the performance is equivalent to a sudo switch pro, the game can run at 800p with the resolution scale at 100% at a steady 40fps, turning the resolution scale down to about 85% however gives you that perfect middle-ground between quality and 60fps. This game is definitely a battery eater for the handheld though giving me about 3 hours of playtime starting fully charged. One unfortunate note however is that the game does not scale to fit the resolution of the steam decks display and will have black bars on the top and bottom of the game-play, if your able to overlook these drawbacks however, its a more than satisfying experience.


This is more than a game, its like an anime that you watch with characters you feel involved with, you keep coming back to see whats going to happen next. Each battle is a fun time with puzzle estranged bosses and recourse management with bullets and consumables, making finding rest areas and reaching the end of each palace have a sense of reprieve.With all of the DLC included and the extra content including an extra month of in game time this game has hours of content for those willing to get lost in its story, and in higher resolutions with higher frame-rates than achievable on the console versions, trust me, you'll want to.
