Left behind and forgotten yet still standing strong. Best Double Fine game.

Edit some years later, to make this a proper review.
It's a weird mix of a hack and slash, racing and strategy genres.
Look, if you are reading this in 2020, you probably know already about all the strong sides and shortcomings. It has a beautuful world coming straight from a heavy album cover, and it has both the atmosphere and music to tie the weak story, boring strategy and non-existant melee combat together in this amazing knot you won't be able to forget. It's a solid 7/10 game. Just buy it on sale and let it collect dust in your library.

There's literally no game in this world like Brütal Legend. It needs a remastered version much more than BioShock ever did. Still waiting for a sequel, but everyone who has even a vague recollection that this exists, including Double Fine themselves, knows that it will never come.

Rest in peace, BL, you will live on in our hearts. They can't stop us, let 'em try, for heavy metal you have died.

I am not going to be one of those people that says everything is bad.
The game is playable even though it doesn't look as good as in trailers. PS4 version plays a bit better than the PC one.
The whole problem is that while the game delivered almost every feature that the developers promised, it didn't deliver it properly. Feels more like an Early Access title right now, though I won't wait for them to fix it as I've already left a request for refund.
If you weren't overhyped about this game - feel free to buy it, as long as your PC is able to handle the game, as it has some terrible optimisation and mediocre visuals. Remember, though, it is a "Zen" title and you have to be able to repeat the same things over and over and over again for a lot of time - the exploration is the same for every planet in the universe.

Update some three and a half years later.

The game is much better than it was on release, but still lacking in a lot of different features. Don't buy it unless you can put up with a game that's about 70% finished.


My review written on the day of release still stays true for the most part. NMS holds a lot of potential, but it's very rough. Compared to the first version, it's much more stable and more polished, but...
It's still broken. Very much so. Textures disappearing, terraforming reverting back to previous state. Wildlife generating in the conditions not really suited for it. Planets having at least a 60% chance to be inhospitable death worlds. And the progress is slow and tedious.

I really feel like Hello Games try to fix this trainwreck, but they lack the vision to make this into a complete experience.
All in all, I wouldn't buy it for any price over 75% sale. It's playable, but you won't enjoy the "endless progression", promise.
Don't buy it for full price. But do try it out, you might actually enjoy it if you have a fresh mindset. I'm still stuck with the first impressions I've got four years ago. And those stay pretty much true. At this point it's just a broken guilty pleasure.

Update some more time later.

It's now year 2022. NMS is a solid game. If only it was released in that state, it would've earned a place in a hall of fame of indie games done right. Still a lot of jank, but if you're into endless progression - worth the price tag. Since 2017 we've seen games be much worse, even the triple-A titles falling under the low bar of launch day No Man's Sky. That's my closing remarks on this game. I ain't ever updating this review again. Enjoy! And know it was much, much worse.
