this one is complicated...
this game is way worse now. used to be a good game, greatly worsened by very poorly thought out roguelike elements on a survival game with new content that looks like modded stuff. its extremely repetitive and has pretty unoriginal themes.

the skills added, theorised to be a little shoulder nudge from Tencent, yes, dont starve together is majorly funded by Tencent, disrupt the balance of the game rendering it rather easy and challengeless, not to mention it looks like a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of graphics and complexity akin to what a mod would look like. seriously, no one asked for this.
it does NOT fit with the game's original design philosophy of an "uncompromising" simple survival game where there is little to no handholding or out-of-place UIs.
luckily there's a "remove skill trees mod".

the actual content updates, despite being pretty repetitive in them (we got like 5 different rifts that do different stuff) did address things players have been wanting for a long time! they added extremely cool items and it really makes the game so much more awesome! i really did like all the lunar and shadow stuff added recently, those are great, the skill trees are not.

the game is still... fine, if you ignore all of these aspects and use the remove skill trees mod, its not like the game (which used to be amazing) suddenly became awful overnight, (in fact the pure horror and pure brilliance items made the game much better imo!) its just a sad sight to see this game descend down this rather strange path with game-breaking and game philosophy killing items added by the skill trees.

to elaborate on that, with every skill tree update the original unique quirks about each character which not only fit neatly into each individual lore and backstory but also gave each character its own unique personality and playstyle, greatly encouraging multiplayer and co-op, since, you know, the game IS called "together", is now melting every single character into this one, bland, no personality, totally not unique, jack of all trades watered down character which ruins the entire point of the game! seriously, what the hell??? how can the devs NOT see this as going against their very own design philosophy!

does it deserve a negative review? well.. not if you consider the bigger picture.
do the recent past of actions taken by the devs reflect a good game with good game design deserving of a positive review? not AT ALL.
