Roguelike dungeon crawler with a lovecraftian flair.
=early access review= (build 7635)

Did you play Darksouls? Did you enjoy the difficulty but think to yourself "Gee, the only thing that would make this game better is if I had to start over every so often from the beginning?" Because if so, then you might enjoy Darkest Dungeon. This game is no joke difficult. Don't walk into it and get attached to your characters, they will die. When they do die, they're gone, for good. Not only that, the ones that do might be the lucky ones. A plethora of madness and pain await the never ending stream of new recruits that arrive every week by carriage into your cursed town.

The plot is pretty great and you can build up your town, allowing your fresh meat to possibly walk to their deaths slightly better equipped than the last group you sent to their deaths. Further more, even though I swore off early access games after the Spacebase DF-9 fiasco, I'm glad I didn't pass on this one. I find myself venturing into the maddening dark over and over, and gleefully awaiting each new update. With promises of new classes and 2 more dungeons, I forsee this being on my 'play' list for a while.

For the price, if you like roguelikes, oldschool D&D vibe, with a splash of Lovecraftian horror, you will not regret buying Darkest Dungeons.

Oldschool rogue-like with a classic feel and a sense of humor.

I enjoy a good roguelike, and I've been a D&D player for decades. This game blends the two into a fun, simple, yet at the same time just 'deep' enough roguelike dungeon crawl that harkens back to the oldschool D&D pc games of yore. Permadeath doesn't feel too brutal with the advancement of your 'academy' meaning that your next hero will have a slight edge. Well worth the very low price for the game and a fun way to kill a little time.

This would be an ok $0.99 app for ios or android. But for a $6 USD "finished" steam game, it's really terrible.

Lets start with the basics. It's a tower defense game.

That's about where it ends, because this game is nothing BUT basics. Fast starting arrow tower, slower AE ground tower, etc etc etc... it's just the same old thing you've seen a hundred times if you're a TD player. But then you get to see the bad aspects of the game. Spelling errors abound. Graphic gliches where a 'bridge' intersects with the road. Graphic bugs that cause the game to either crash, or constantly spam the screen with 'acheivments' (which block your spells). Poor choice of starting cash leading you to be forced to grind early levels to upgrade towers. Spells that just are very underwhelming.

I'd say if this game drops below $1 USD AND you like very typical iOS / android app style tower defense games, go for it. But otherwise skip this one. It brings absolutely nothing to the table other than a vanilla TD with notable flaws.

DO NOT BUY THIS UNFINISHED GAME

-

Well, I can say that I will never ever buy a single double fine game again ever. This is the biggest INTENTIONAL slap in the face to a fanbase that I've ever seen a video game company do. Move over EA you've got competition for biggest scumbag video game company now. As someone who bought into the 'early access' scam they were doing for this game, I can't even begin to tell you how far off the 1.0 'release' is from what we were promised a year ago. To simply say that they're not going to follow through on their development promises because it's not cost effective? That's sickening. They had a lot of people give them money based on their development plan. Are those people getting refunds since they aren't getting the promised product or anything even remotely close to it?

As to reviewing the actual game, it's got the great bones for a game. It is what it is... an ALPHA build for an unfinished game. DO NOT BUY.

[BETA REVIEW]

4x perfection in the making.

First off, the developers call this a 'spiritual successor' to the old DOS game Master of Magic put out by Microprose in 1994. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Magic I feel like what they are in the process of crafting is nothing less than a love letter penned in gold ink on the finest paper ever milled. I caution people who don't know and love Master of Magic to maybe wait on buying Worlds of Magic till it's a little more finished, as it is quite incomplete at the moment.

But what is currently done is nothing less than spectacular. As someone who wasted weeks and months of my life playing MoM back in the 9s, I can see how amazing this game will be. Keeping true all of the elements that made MoM and many other 4x games so amazing, it's infused with fantastic graphics and play style that catapults me back to an earlier time and leaves me wanting more more more more!

I can not wait to play this game more and can't wait till the product is finished, so i can sink more of my life into it.

Look, you either know Magic: The Gathering, or you don't. So you shouldn't need a reccomendation, but I'll say this about the 2013 duel of the planeswalkers shell. It's an improvement in most ways over the 2012 version. While they stumble a bit by removing some of the popular play styles from 2012 (archenemy WHERE ARE YOU?), and it's crippled in multiplayer by server lag, making the game often unplayable online, the single player game can't be faulted.

The single player game, turn based and fun, is a great fix for those M:TG players who want a computer experience that's actually like the card game.

I'd give the game 7/10 stars, and that rating would be higher if multiplayer was CONSTNATLY crippled by server lag, making every attempt I've made at the game, completely unplayable.

How can I reccomend this game using one of a billion things that haven't already been said about it?

Let me say this: DONT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU ARE A WUSS.

I'm not calling you out. I'm not saying that you'll be a man for buying this game. This game is f***ing frustrating as hell. As you play, your character doesn't get better, YOU get better. The game trains you to take it in the face, over and over and over and over... and then ask for more. The best analogy I can give for this game is if you spent the hottest day in the summer hot tar roofing. You sweat your ass off and felt like you were in hell for 12 hours, just so that at the end of the day, when you cracked open an ice cold beer, it would taste so much better.

Dark souls is an unforgivingly brutal game where difficult doesn't even begin to describe the play style. No hint guides, no easy mode, no tutorial. You are dropped into a game with a broken sword and some clothing and then told "go." No other help is given except from your fellow players, half of the time said advice is trolling.

Yet through it all, after 45+ deaths in less than an hour, you are still respawning and trying again, knowing that if you can just get past that next enemy, just get to the next checkpoint, just get the timing on that one fight down... you'll have a new way to die.

...and you'll hate every frustrating ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ minute of it, yet you keep playing. Because you must.

Another fantastic Rogue-like game. Similar to my review of Binding of Issac, a lot of times you aren't playing to win THAT Game, but unlock something for the next time. There's a lot of variation and you really feel like every choice and decision matters. Do you spend your scrap (currency) on a new cannon or a new crew member? Do you risk sending your crew to rescue trapped federation troops from giant space spiders or leave the troops to their fate?

The only criticism I have with the game is that I wish there was a little more 'exploration' time. There's a constant 'time crunch' as you run for your life from the rebel fleet that's persuing you. I wish there was a mode for more relaxed play. But FTL is definitly worth the $10 entry price if you are into sci fi at all.

I couldn't even begin to count the hundreds of hours that I put into 1994's Xcom:Ufo Defense. I played it as recently as last year for a few weeks. How many video games can you say that you play almost 20 years later?

So it was with trepidation that I approached this remake. Could it live up to the classic?

Yes.

It can and it does. While it probably won't have the amazing shelf life of the original, it does everything right. The gameplay feels very similar, keeping important elements of the original game while ditching unneeded ones like clunky inventory management.

Be prepared to feel a real sense of choice and loss, as there's just almost no way to beat the game without losing troops or funding countries on any but the easiest difficulty. While this might seem like a detraction, it's actually one of the things that lends a sense of urgency to the game. The clock is ticking, the world is at stake, do you take the time to capture aliens or kill them? Do you spend money on more fighter craft or build a research lab?

10/10 is what I give this game. Seriously, other than the multiplayer which simply feels 'tacked on' for no reason, this game couldn't get any better. I would have given it 9/10 due to some graphic bugs when it was first released, most notably inside certain alien craft, but a recent patch fixed it.

This game is a must buy.

Buyer beware - PVP online only.

A fun little strategy game. It's fairly simplistic but enjoyable. It's online player verus player only, with no skirmish mode, and I hate that. Buying it on steam gives you access to two teams, the humans and the Team Fortress 2 team, but there are three others. Just pray you don't get matched against someone who's paid to unlock the dark elves, you'll lose.

That's part of the problem with the game, the racial abilities for some teams are radically overpowered. Teamfortress2 team has the ability to gain an extra move every time they 'kill' a unit by stomping. Since each round has 5 moves, adding a 6th is pretty huge. But the dark elves ability to heal EVERY TIME THEY DO DAMAGE is ridiculously overpowered. I have played over 30 games so far and I haven't been able to beat the dark elves even once.

For $5, if you like strategy games like this, it's definitly fun. Maybe if you buy the 2 pack and play with a friend, it would be better.
