10.7 Hours played
Very solid little game, here! I would say getting it on sale, as I did, is a good value. Cavern of Dreams is fairly short, though it did take me about 9 hours or so to play through 100%, perhaps slower than average for total completion. If you were to just go through it quickly without a desire to 100% the game or find any secrets, I reckon a couple hours would be plenty.

Cavern of Dreams faithfully recreates the feel of N64 era collectathon games, with charming and cute characters. There's a lot of little hidden easter eggs to find, with a nice sprinkling of spooky atmosphere. I found the gameplay easy, but not to the point of being boring. The difficulty curve through the game is good, with each upgrade to Fynn increasing the complexity of your platforming tasks. My biggest gripe with the game is the peculiar choice to make the highest jump require holding a button down, which makes it kind of clunky - it also requires you to do a tail swing attack which will often send you bouncing off a wall when you did not intend to, losing you progress. Fortunately, there's not really any major drawbacks to taking damage or 'dying', the worst cases just sending you back to the beginning of an area. Most areas are not terribly expansive though, so getting back to where you were isn't that time consuming.

Sometimes the momentum of Fynn's movement can feel somewhat inconsistent where it can be kind of hard to get the right speed to launch as far as you need to for certain collectibles, or doing what you assumed was the same thing will yield different results due to the inconsistent physics. It's not so bad that it makes the game unplayable, but it did lend itself to a few frustrating moments where I died because I bounced strangely for seemingly no reason. Some of the puzzles are also a little obtuse, though I appreciate that many puzzles do require some real thought. Very minor gripes for an overall extremely enjoyable and nostalgic-feeling experience. The soundtrack was good, though fairly relaxed in tone, especially compared to its classic contemporaries.

Overall, I really enjoyed this game and would very much like a sequel. It gave me all the warm fuzzy feelings of replaying my favorite N64 titles from my childhood, and I think it is a true love letter to the genre. Anyone who enjoyed those types of games will undoubtedly enjoy this title, too! Props to the developers for their hard work making a game that feels very genuine!
