This is a really unique take on the mechbuilder genre. Very unique mechanics and the diegetic elements add so much to the game.

at first glance, Anthology of the Killer appears to be a quirky love letter to the 90s-early y2k cartoon culture (think courage the cowardly dog/ rocko's modern life) and giallo/slasher films. once you dig deeper, it's so much more than that.

the game blends social commentary of the young urbanite's nightmare with the surreal twang of the occult, and balances this perfectly with a refreshing dash of saturday morning cartoon. The resulting dreamlike atmosphere of this game (supported by tommy tone's moody soundtrack) has the tendency to wash over you like waves. it feels like old graphic tees, dusty yearbooks and sacred relics of your childhood experienced 20 years later. one third realistic, one third unsettling, last third hilarious, it left me totally enthralled. it rules!!

shout out to the writing, which is oftentimes very referential yet sharp and surprisingly free of snobbishness. the dialogue is witty and enjoyable, the characters and villains of the week are endearing and memorable, and the entire experience will stick with you long after the run time. because the game is in anthology format, it's also very interesting to see the dev's skill increase game after game as he learns and applies new techniques.

there's literally no other game like this, 10/10. play it!
