What a delightful surprise of a game. I bought it on an impulse from a good looking reddit ad and I don't regret it. This game really peels back the layers of souls-like and makes something fun and interesting in a small digestible package. Worth playing

What a beautiful narrative. This game really explores what it means to tell stories in games and how to keep the player on their feet when it comes to perspective, discomfort and understanding. I loved getting to a new chapter and finding that the way I interacted with the world was completely, or even just slightly different.

This game is somewhat of a walking simulator - there is very little 'play' per se - so if that's a deal breaker for you, you should be aware. Otherwise I recommend diving right in.

The game had an interesting promise, but upon playing and beating it in the first try (albeit on the skeptic mode) the gameplay turns out to be paper thin and the stories are pretty bland to the point of being meaningless. Very much has the vibes of something like Arkham Horror the Board Game, but without any of the cooperation between players that makes that game interesting and meaningful.

Unfortunately I waited too long after purchasing or else I would be going for a refund.

Nice short game with emergent rules about how your character works. Worth the 5 or so bucks.

The game is fine, and had some nice moments, but it was all pretty easy and I wasn't nearly as taken with the story as some of the other comments make it out to be.

I probably wouldn't have picked it up if it wasn't for the glowing reviewed, and wouldn't really recommend it to others.

Very fun, very chill, very short. 100% within 4 hours, but man this game vibes. The writing the dripping with character and charm.

Would recommend for a little romp around a breath of the wild inspired world without any (real) fighting.

Not just another Slay the Spire clone - this one has a fun positioning puzzle and a great spirit in its storytelling

Early Access Review
A game good enough that I'm trying NOT to play it so I don't spoil the experience of when it is finished

I refunded this game on Steam and then purchased and completed it on PS5.

I loved this entry. As a Dark Souls and FF fan it's like this game was made for me. The combat is so tight and difficult but also rewarding that I was gripped from the beginning to the end. Even on random hallway fights you have to think about how you approach things.

The story... isn't great. The back end makes up for much of the weakness of the beginning, but it still isn't particularly good even taking the later half into consideration. Play this game for the great combat, and don't expect anything amazing from the story.

I've played the game through to the end and made it to the secret boss. I enjoyed it enough to keep going, but I don't think I can recommend it in general, and definitely not at full price.

This game is a beautiful homage to classic JRPGs that somehow misses the best parts of those games. By fracturing your story into eight four-chapter different stories that can be played in any order, you don't have any moments where your characters actually interact and build the feeling of what your party is like (sorry - travel banter does not cut it). Part of what I love about JRPGs is the secrets that you discover and the feeling of power when you find something off the beaten path that you can play with. In Octopath Traveler, aside from a few advanced roles (which are icons as you travel the map - hardly a secret!), this takes the form of inconsequential chests that can be found by blindly walking into walls until you find the out of sight path.

But, like I said I was happy to play the game - the story was fine, and the battles were quite fun for a while. It just... wasn't enough. And it doesn't make me eager to play Octopath Traveler 2.
