You like Id Software? Their early work was a little too maze-game for my tastes. But when Quake came out in '96, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole game has a dark, gritty aesthetic, and a new sheen of hardware accelerated graphics that really gives the engine a big boost.
