This game advertises as the spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri.

So... long story short? It isn't.

Short story long?

Personality: In SMAC, each leader has personality. The personality aspect lets you remember who each person is and the ingame story gives each of the leaders growth and further backstory. You get to feel and understand how each leader is. In this game? Random conglomerate guy on random planet get money. Why? idunno.

Technology: The tech tree in SMAC makes sense. You start with old 1980s computers. You build up slowly. You have the knowledge, but not the tools. Eventually, after maybe a few centuries, your small advances make sense and they even bring it back up. There is a quote by Morgan in SMAC where he mentions that computers, genetic engineering, self repairing machines are all great, but real technology are the simple things we don't notice like having megatons of weight being held up by a single hair. In Beyond Earth, you can pick between 3 tech trees or a mix of them, but generally, they feel mostly the same.

Units: SMAC has customizable units. Teleporting Death Spheres, Invisible soldiers. Psychic planes. Beyond Earth sort of has this, but not as much.

Maps: This is where Beyond Earth wins. It has more than 1 map or at least more than 1 planet.

Graphics: Well... SMAC is 20+ years old at this point. So... ya.

Main Story: Well, SMAC wins. I don't even remember what the Beyond Earth Story is aside from go to other planets.

Get it? Sure, but it needs massive overhauls to be remotely close to SMAC.

It starts off confusing, then its fun for a bit, community is nice. Support itself is less than helpful. A lot of undelivered promises.

Early on they were community focused. Currently its a money grab and they have realized that they maybe should have kept earlier promises.

DLCs in this game are seriously overpriced. However, everything can be farmed. Game itself is fun and is a mix between twisted metal and lego..

Edit:

Recently, with certain dlcs, it has started on its path to pay to win. I've seen games go on the pay to win slope before. Starts with small things here and there, then we see some limited time offers which give small bonuses.

At the moment that I'm writing this, there are maybe a dozen cash only items. Some are pretty useless, some however give game breaking advantages. It starts small, but will get big. I'm sure that in a year or so this game is going to have cars which are so cash heavy that they will have a big advantage over others.

If DLC was for pure aesthetics or as promised, early access items only, then it would have been fine. But dlc has p2w stuff.

There are very tiny latency issues sometimes over wifi, also, there seems to be random disconnects. However, this product is very good at the price you buy it for.

I've played this game so many times to completion and every time there is still something new.

One of the great classics. It gives you more freedom than hundreds of modern games combined.

Want to be an ogre thief? Go ahead. Want to seduce the skeleton, sure. Want to convince the necromancer to NOT end all life? Its possible.

The controller is good, but to get it wired is a bit of a hassle. Keyboarding with it, not so great. Good static sounds and vibrations though.

I used to love this game. They said they were never going to become a dlc payfest. Well guess what? DLCs are so common now that sometimes they will be releasing 2-3 at the same time and another 2-3 within the same month.

Loud and not as fun as the og series.

Still hack and slash, needs a bit more skill now, but its pretty much a completely different game from the others.
