For a better introduction to this series, check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh4P9Lzplfg (not mine btw, just making it clear).

There are 3 types of people who are interested in these games:

1) Those who enjoy the alchemy system alongside the combat system (you do well in alchemy = you do well in combat)
2) Those who enjoy lots of character interaction of cute girls doing cute things in a cute town
3) All of the above

I'm comfortably sitting in category 3. This game in particular is just slice of life, minimal to no story, full of character interactions by talking to people and evolving your relationship with them, gathering items and alchemy. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, hop right in!

I'm having a blast playing this game. It has a combat that feels more slow and deliberate instead of the speed fiesta that is Warframe.

I also see lots of people complaining about the grinding. It's true that it's required to grind but if you have fun killing stuff left and right you won't notice any short of tediousness. Feelings of tediousness are noticeable when your game isn't fun and you're joing going through the motions because you want to get over this part and move on.

People also claim that this game is P2W, it's really pay to convenience since it's a PVE game with asynchronous PVP (you can send your characters to other people but they become NPC to their game).

There's also confusion as to what to do first as a beginner, there's a discord server and a subreddit dedicated to the game and the game is kinda niche in the F2P crowd because of its style and gameplay and not because it's a bad game. I saw the video of some guy complaining that he had to use consumable mushrooms that can give you damage and armor buffs in order to kill a boss and I was like "yes? that's every RPG ever". There's even a mushroom that works like Tears of Denial from Dark Souls.

Compared to Warframe where you are a cyborg ninja in space who bullet jumps at Sonic speeds, here you are just a mortal in a dystopia in a claustophobic tower that's full of abominations as you try to fight enemies one-two at a time. There's no such things as cheesy strats, everything is fair game since it's a ROGUELIKE and your characters can die permanently (well, you can revive them with in-game gold or just go kick their undead face in with another characrter, because you have to have more than one character).

Have fun senpai!

Thanks to Square-Enix my decision to stop bothering with modern video games is only fortified. Seriously, how come a single company have access to some of the greatest game developers in Japan and yet manage to turn everything upside down?

Take for example Nier: Automata. A game of this quality comes out once every Olympic games. And what do they do with it? They push it on Steam, refuse to patch any technical issues (which as you can imagine there are technical issues for every new release), and instead only remember that there's a PC market when it's time to cash in all the DLC.

And now it's time for Dragon Quest to suffer. As if Horii didn't had enough problems trying to push the franchise in the West for the last 20 years, he finally takes another good break and... first comes the diva you dare calling a composer, who basically rehashes the same songs since the NES era, shipping a fully 3D fleshed out game with non-orchestral music (to put it mildly).

And we collectively agree that it's "fine" because "it's a matter of taste, and this is subjective", people enjoy eating from the garbage can because merging the smell of socks with fries is for connoisseurs!

Now this game is dated by the upgrade which you can buy on Steam, but that's not all! Not only is the upgrade a downgrade in terms of assets, it also has... the symphonic music the game should have shipped at the beginning. Basically, we're paying extra because your diva sellout of a composer, who cannot even reach the upper echelon of JRPG composers such as Nobuo Uematsu and Kenji Ito, decides it's time to make some extra dosh.

And how do we do that? By completely forgetting of the fact that DLC is a thing and making your faithful customers pay up more than they should.

So no, don't buy this game. You can't anyways since SE wouldn't want you to exercise your freedom of choice! Trash. How the mighty companies have fallen. I can only feel bad for Horii.

I can't believe this game has been sitting in my library for so long and it's actually good.

It's basically a SaGa series game in everything but the name, which translates to:

  • Fast progressing story (forget no walls of text a la Trails games which is refreshing change of pace) but don't expect too much from the story in terms of complexity, it's somewhat straightforward so far.
  • Gameplay first, story second
  • Grinding actually punishes you so you instead have to understand, strategize and decide instead of mindlessly farm monsters while watching Twitch. In fact, SaGa games require you to know when to NOT fight, so playing them with the mindset of "I'll just fight every fight I get in my way" is a recipe for disaster. Try applying the "I'm just fighting what's in my screen!" logic here and enjoy hating yourself forever https://youtu.be/f8KMcHFvNkc?t=174

Suprisingly, my Windows 10 64-bit managed to run the game at 1080p/60fps (framerate is probably unlockable but can't tell cause 60 Hz monitor) and without using a single "hack" to run the game (which is weird because the game is old as heaven).

If you're interested in other SaGa games there's Romancing Saga 2 on Steam. If you're playing games for the story and can't bother spending time understanding what the game tells you, and what words like "preplanning" and "preparation" are, don't buy this,

Also don't buy this if you're looking for something that's "like Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest" or whatever, it's not. It's a SaGa game, cutting off what makes a SaGa game being a SaGa game just to make it fit your assumptions and expectations only makes you look like an idiot to anyone who knows what's up and insults any game design sophistication Kawazu implemented. And no, you're not even half as good as Akitoshi Kawazu.

Buy the game for what it is. If you got somewhat tempted to "making it better with mods" just save your money.

I was hesitating to buy this game given that I wasn't enjoying watching it on Twitch streams. Big mistake.

The game is fun as hell once you play it. It's sad that there's a pervasive technical issue at the launch time that makes the game unplayable for a lot of people. Once the issue gets patched the game will definitely worth its price tag.

And while it doesn't affect me, it affects a lot of people and if they won't fix it on time the online community will be dead on arrival. Which is why I'm downvoting the game until the issues are fixed. It affects my gameplay experience by proxy since less people playing because of tech issues = less active online.

Lazy cash grab with the most raw and unpatched versions of each game, and poor ranking system and matchmaking implementation.

Avoid this like plague.

tl;dr if you enjoyed Shovel Knight but never played a classic Castlevania game, buy this for your first Castlevania experience. If you played classic Castlevania games this one's significantly easier in the first playthrough but gets harder, and you'll have to play through the game about 3-4 times to unlock all modes but it's not that bad because you get to access different paths on every playthrough so there's not too much of the same thing.

Also, aren't you thankful that our lord and savior Gabe Newell protected your virgin eyes from evil words such as the f word? Clearly sensoring the word makes it better! /s

One of the best, if not the best Ys game on Steam right now and a great entry point to the series, only because Ys I & II Chronicles use the dated bump system for attacks and that tends to turn off newcomers.

Early Access Review
Looks and plays like ♥♥♥♥ and it's blatantly obvious that their target audience is the naive people who will be willing to spend money in the in-game premium shops in good faith.

Basically, anyone who's too naive will fall for this. "Xtreme early access" tag line should be a red flag to anyone.

The new difficulties fixed the major problem I had with the game!

Thank you! Now I can recommend this game to my friends.
