Right you heard, two separate projects are in the works (one probably for the people owning the original retail release and a Steamworks patch as well) to keep the online community of Sam 2 active after GameSpy's shutdown.

Well, this group can still function as a base to bring together as many Steam Sam 2 players as possible and have some Serious Fun without having to hunt for servers with more than 4 people playing at the same time.

Sam 2 is surprisingly populated though, there weren't any occasions when the server list was completely empty, the same can't be said about Sam 3 where the deserted server list is quite a frequent sight.
