After the Emperor allowed for elections to be held within the Imperial Parliament, it seemed to be a surprise change especially considering his 1955 Constitution that keeps him above the Parliament, making it almost useless. Although he has promised a new one and so has invited the leading parties, the Social Democratic Party and Socialist parties to help him create a new Constitution for the Empire, wishing for the most popular coalition party to take part in the creation of the new Constitution. He is willing to compromise with the Socialists and left-leaning members of Ethiopia despite his disagreements with them, although he is getting more hesitant about "democracy" by the day as he is a staunch religious conservative but his cousin, Imru Haile Selassie, continues to pressure and convince him to listen to the people and allow them more civil liberties.

After speaking to the Left Coalition, the new Constitution has been decided with several more liberal changes to it being included; the most important elements of it are the fact that mayors shall be elected, Royal Ministers must have confidence of the Parliament, and 75% of Senators have to be elected while Judges can still be appointed by the Emperor. This constitution has been signed and put into power as the Imperial Constitution of 1961. Another matter is that in times of war or great crisis, the Emperor has full control over the military's actions as supreme commander in chief of the army still, but the Parliament has control over various things such as the ability to push for laws, veto certain ones, and set up a budget.



With this new Constitution, the Emperor has, with the agreement of the Leftist Coalition, put Imru Haile Selassie, "The Red Ras" in place as Prime Minister of Ethiopia.

The Emperor has decided to attempt to greatly improve the literacy of the population with a great literacy campaign to put the children and young to school to learn how to read as well as to have some of the older people be tutored in reading as more schools are ordered to be set up within the nation as well. In general, he hopes to make his people more intelligent and literate with this campaign and allow the people to vote with greater confidence in future elections as they can be more educated in their choices. The Emperor shall use the money taken from the wealthiest in the progressive income tax to fund this campaign as well as from some of his own coffers!

The Emperor has also decided to try to expand the agricultural sectors as there is a lot of uncultivated land in the South that has been left such due to fears of Malaria but much of these worries have been purged with the various actions of the Anti-Malaria Organizations that exist that have been extremely effective in the 1950s and probably beyond as such fears slowly evaporate. The Emperor shall “encourage” certain groups to immigrate to these areas and begin farming, particularly pastoral nomads that still exist within the Empire. He promises them aid in setting up the farms and teaching them the various techniques for the glory of the Empire.

Prime Minister Ikeda, seeking to improve conditions within Japan, cement and encourage economic growth, and curb socialist influence, has introduced new reforms that were recently passed by the Diet. With the reforms, Statutory Minimum Wages, a System of Universal Health Insurance, and The Physically Disabled Persons Employment Promotion Law were all instituted. These reforms shall ensure that all citizens of Japan see the benefits of increased economic growth.

Amid tensions with the Illegal Occupational Military Government of Northern Korea, Japanese and Korean officials met in Tokyo to conclude two treaties: the Treaty on Basic Relations between the State of Japan and Republic of Korea[docs.google.com] and the Treaty of Friendship & Reconciliation between the State of Japan and the Republic of Korea[docs.google.com]. With the signing of these two treaties, it is expected that Japan and Korea will begin to reopen trade ties and foster a tranquil and peaceful order in East Asia. Japanese Diplomats have also introduced proposals for the RoK to join the Association of Asian and Pacific Nations, though no agreement has been met.

Crown Prince Akihito, son of Hirohito, first in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne, married Michiko Shōda on the 10th of April 1959. The Imperial Couple met two years prior in August of 1957 on a tennis court at Kurizawa near Nagano. In 1958, Emperor Hirohito, having renewed powers to grant titles of nobility, had granted the father of Michiko, Hidesaburō Shōda, the title of Baron, and approved the engagement of the now "Baron's Daughter" Michiko to Akihito on 27 November 1958. Their engagement ceremony would take place on the 14th of January 1959, with the marriage following sixteen months later. The marriage has proved to be widely popular, with couple producing a son, Naruhito, being born on February 23rd 1960.

Inejiro Asanuma, the chairman of the Socialist Party, was assassinated by seventeen-year-old Ultranationalist Otoya Yamaguchi live on stage during a political debate for the House of Representatives. Yamaguchi was promptly arrested. The shocking act harkens back to the early years of the Shōwa Era, when the Imperial Army would often assassinate those who opposed its militaristic and imperialistic ways. Both the Liberal Democratic Party and Socialist Party have condemned the act while various ultranationalists throughout the country have shown great support to Yamaguchi, with many writing letters to the young boy in prison. Asanuma, a charismatic politician who declared that the United States was "the shared enemy of Japan and China" following a visit to Beijing in 1959 sparked much outrage and controversy throughout his political career. Otoya Yamaguchi, Asanuma's assassin, was found dead after hanging himself with a makeshift rope crafted from his bedsheet. Written on the wall with a mixture of water and toothpaste was the phrase "Seven lives for my country. Long live His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor!".

Unsurprisingly, following the increased tensions between North Korea and the State of Japan, resulting in a North Korean plane attempting to attack Japanese Fishermen, the turnout for the Liberal Democratic Party was massive. Securing nearly 69% of the House of Representatives, the Liberal Democratic Party now holds 321 seats. Second came the Socialist Party, who secured 123 seats, followed by the break-off faction of the Democratic Socialist Party, whom managed to take 20 seats. 2 Independents and 1 MP from a Minor Party were also elected. With the popular mandate, the LDP has essentially secured continued rule and legitimization of the constitutional revisions and foreign policy of the Kishi Administration.

Douglas MacArthur, the American General who led the Allied Occupation of Japan following the Second World War, has received the Order of the Rising Sun with Paulownia Flowers, Grand Cordon. The General, being recognized for his great deeds both within Japan and without, was deeply moved by the award, speaking to reporters in New York following the presentation of the honor to him. Many Japanese still hold high regard for MacArthur for his respectful treatment of the nation and his insistence on re-establishing civil government, something many Japanese deeply desired since the era of military interference in government following the end of the Taishō Era.

With his economic goals undertaken in Southeast Asia, Nobusuke Kishi, after several years of negotiations, has finally succeeded in securing an alliance between the United States and Japan. The Treaty of Alliance between the United States and Japan[docs.google.com], recognizing both states as sovereign, and seeing cooperation between the two states as being desirable, was signed by Prime Minister Kishi and President Eisenhower on December 19th 1960. The Treaty was incredibly unpopular with pacifists, seeing it as a further step towards Japanese entry into the ongoing Indochina Crisis, as well as possibly undermining Japanese sovereignty towards the U.S. Leaked reports from the Ryukyus indicated that Okinawans feel betrayed and abandoned by Japan for the lack of a settlement regarding the return of the territories, though Tokyo has been oddly quiet on any comments regarding any potential or desired changes to the American Presence on the Island.

Following the signing of the treaty, Kishi, believing that the general anger over various acts - such as the constitutional revisions and the new alliance - would perhaps hamper the Liberal Democratic Party and Government of Japan at large, has decided to resign. The Liberal Democratic Party thus began voting for a new president, resulting in the election of Hayato Ikeda, a moderate who has spoken of "great plans to introduce major healthcare and social service reforms". However, after the election of Ikeda to the Presidency of the Liberal Democratic Party, a would-be assassin attempted to kill Kishi outside the Liberal Democratic Party headquarters, though the former Premier survived the assassination attempt. Following the election, Hirohito officially appointed Hayato Ikeda as Prime Minister of Japan.

The elections of 1960

Today the results of the 1960 presidential elections came out with a resounding victory for Jânio Quadros! With João Goulart from the PTB being elected as vice.

Jânio was elected on a strong anti-corruption campaign, having iconically adopted a broom as his campaign symbol. His political ascendency was extremely quick as well, and his crushing victory over his opponents surprised many.

A very dramatic figure. No one quite knows what to expect from him...

Presidential elections have hit the people of America again. President Eisenhower is enjoying his last year as President of the United States as he is the first president barred from running a third term under new constitutional amendments. President Eisenhower’s Vice President Richard Nixon ran for the Republican nomination and scored it easily for his name recognition and strong stance in the Republican Party. John F. Kennedy, a young and Catholic man, was believed to be out of the race for the Democratic primaries. It was quickly figured out though that he was a strong contender having won Wisconsin and then West Virginia (A Protestant State). Kennedy and his family would tour around the nation gathering large support in many of the states clinching the nomination easily from other competitors.

Coming up to election day in 1960, nobody knew who the victor would be. Senator Kennedy hit hard on the Eisenhower administration for not keeping up to date on the Soviet Union militarily and economically around the world. Nixon though had much of the love that people had for Eisenhower carry over and be attached to his name. All was well for Nixon though until President Eisenhower made a slip up in an interview where he was asked “What policies of Richard Nixon’s did you employ?” with President Eisenhower responding with “Give me a week and I will get back to you.”

It was a very close election in the end. The victor was decided by .5% difference in the popular vote. The winner of the 1960 President Election in the United States is….. Senator John F. Kennedy. Many did not believe that he could pull out the victory, but with his family’s support and hard hits on the Eisenhower administration, he was able to pull an upset just like President Truman in 1948.


President Eisenhower in his last months in office has called for action in Indochina and request that Congress pass a resolution to protect the region from collapsing to Communism. This resolution would give the United States the ability to provide money to those fighting Communism in Indochina and forces to maintain the peace if the countries deem so as necessary to their national sovereignty and independence. Eisenhower plans to have this quickly passed to protect people from a chain of Communist expansion that he called the “Domino Theory”.


The United States has called for NATO to begin some Wargames in Europe in order to test their strategies and prepare for the possible worse outcome that could happen in Europe should the Cold War ever turn hot. All nations of NATO are asked to participate and begin such exercises together. Through these exercises, America hopes to be able to achieve more unity among the armies and a better fight force for if war ever comes to the West in Europe.
