FAQ: "Which Distribution should I use?"
My personal favorite is Mint with MATE. There are situations where I'd recommend a different one, but certainly not to begin with.

Here is a download link:

And i couldn't come around mentioning SteamOS, although i heard it had a worse performance than either Mint or Ubuntu in gaming, but here is a link anyway: (since i am so happy with Mint I didn't try SteamOS yet.)

Probably for now Ubuntu LTS (16.04) is the best choice due to popular "System requirements". This is more or less robust GNU/Linux distribution. About video for gaming (current situation): the best choice is Nvidia+closed source drivers (desktop PC) or Intel (notebook).

i myself am a nvidia fan but run currently amd (because i got a good one for free) and don't have any trouble with it
but i know for a fact that amd and gnu is always a gamble, either it runs smoothly or hardly at all

WIth what little experience I have had so far, I would suggest Mint Cinnamon or MATE, depending on preference.

Currently i play on my about "half a year old pc" with Ubuntu 18.04, AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, AMD Radeon RX 560 (Open Source MESA drivers).

On top of installing Ubuntu, i only had to install steam and inside steam the "SteamOS + Linux" games are playable "out of the box". Although i have more knowledge, that pretty sounds like "Plug'n'Play" for Linux beginners ;-)

As i might start using/testing Proton, i installed newer-than-included MESA drivers (PPA from paulo-miguel-dias), but before i could play e.g. Payday2 and RocketLeague without a severe issue with the "stock" OS graphics drivers.

I think the best are "bloatless" distros. I started with ubuntu, but now I run arch and debian stable on my machines. I just do not like having many programs that I do not use preinstalled
