I can only agree with you on that statements. Appearently a lot of developer decided that the money they make on Linux gamers isn't worth the money they have to put in porting (And I don't disagree, although i want too :D, since i don't have insight into their money household.)
But if you really don't want to miss out on these games and have a pc with gaming hardware, I can recommend running win in a VM.

It's a shame, really. Millions use Mint alone, with millions more using other various Distros.

No I am really refering to games that are native to Linux, thus games which do not require wine or a VM.
The following statistic is a couple of months old so there are probably more Linux, Xbox ONE and PS4 games by now, but it still shows what i was talking about:

Linux games on Steam: 2624
Wii + Wii U games: 2274
PS3 games: 2224
PS4 games :1710
Xbox One games: 1427
Xbox 360 games: 1234

And I hardly have any problems with gaming on Linux. The only game so far that I really couldn't get to work properly was Hitman, which had just too many grafic glitches.

There are more games for linux on steam (including lots of AAAgames) then there are games for consoles.

The most common reason i hear why people still use Windows is, that "games are made for windows". What better place is there to disprove that theory than steam?
And b.t.w. is a game that's windows-only not a reason for me to still use that OS, since supporting (by buying) these games will only keep up there kind-of-monopoly. Let's show the developers that there is a market for Linuxgames and let's show windowsgamers, that there are indeed good games for Linux and that it is a platform that you can decently play on.

Although I will admit that this quote:

games are made for windows".

is rather misinformed to a point, they also have a point too. What I mean is that I have discovered some things in my short adventure so far in being a Linux convert. You can get WIndows programs to run on Linux with Wine and various other options, but, it can also be a crapshoot of whether it might work properly, work half-assed, or not work at all.

WIth what little experience I have had so far, I would suggest Mint Cinnamon or MATE, depending on preference.
