But that's the flavor, AoE2 gameplay in antiquity settings.

If that mod got ancient civs added over time, Chronicles will get too. We just need to wait.
The units are not the new content. well except for the new unique units I suppose. The main content that you're paying for are the campaign missions. Think you just sort of missed the point of the expansion.
1, 2, and 6 is a bad take lmao. What type of gameplay do you want for classic civs? You want a bunch of medieval guys fighting in early 400BC? Literally what's wrong with reskin but keeping the core gameplay interesting?
