I heavily recommend playing the first Disgaea before this one, whether by Disgaea PC or elsewhere. In fact it's probably best to play the games in order, but that's the only really mandatory one and you will probably know whether you want more of the series once you beat it.

If you do find yourself wanting to continue the series, Disgaea 5 is one of the best both story and gameplay-wise. Unlike its earlier entries, it takes up an epic outer-space setting and story akin to the older game, Makai Kingdom. You are a team of Overlords traveling between worlds and liberating them from an evil army.

The game carries over most gameplay elements from earlier games save for a few, and judging by what I hear of later entries, is the most mechanically deep of the series. It's probably the best looking in the series too, with polished 2D sprites that are animated fantastically, not to mention a killer soundtrack. The swap to 3D just doesn't pack the same visual appeal.

Given its price on sale, and the amount of content, it is a total steal, and doesn't feel dated. The main problem with later entries is that Disgaea 5 set a very, very high bar.
