Did Apocalypse aliens influence Half-Life?
I'm not sure if it's been discussed before, but it's occurred to me while trying to get into Apoc that it shares certain things with Half-Life, namely extradimensional aliens invading our world, and two of the aliens in particular seem right out of HL1, namely the headcrab / brainsucker and the bullsquid/multiworm.

Apoc came out in 1997 and HL1 released in late 1998, a year earlier Half-Life would have still been in the midst of development and it changed significantly from its initial conception if memory serves.

Anyone more familiar with the history want to chime in?

Its hard to say, without asking the devs behind Half Life itself. Try to ask a few of them that are still around in HL's credits. Would love to see a post about what influenced the development of the game too.

Almost all the inspiration comes from Giger's Alien, including Tim White's work on Apocalypse.

There are also elements taken from The Thing (1982) and it's own inspirations in The Thing from Another World and Invasion of the Body Snatchers as well as much older literature such as The War of the Worlds

Indeed, this is why ***SPOILERS*** the aliens in Apoc turn out to be single cell organisms and anything larger simply a "vessel" for them to infect out dimension - the best host being mankind

To paraphrase The Thing slogan "Mankind is the warmest place to hide"

Ah dang I totally forgot about H.R. Gieger and how influential Alien/Aliens was! Very good points! Thank you for the insight. I appreciate it.

No worries, i had the pleasure of touching base with Tim White's daughter, Lucy, as part of my deep dive into all things Apoc for the OpenApoc project.

His work is incredible and being active in the same decades as H R Giger doing predominantly sci-fi art for book covers, jewellery and sculpture took Tim some interesting places down the years being part of the great artistic pool of talent that was 1970s scifi

Ultimately, White's talent combined with the team at Mythos, resulted in Apoc's aliens, despite the constant meddling and misdirection from Microprose who almost everyone on the ground creating the game agrees was a toxic influence - alienating both programmer, designer and artist alike as Microprose pushed gimmicks and ideas that noone really wanted (and wasted dev time or presented issue with getting Tim's incredible sculpts into the game in a way that did not result in "blobs of pixels")

That's awesome. Yours is exactly the kind of comment and background info I was hoping for when I initially posted my question/comment. Thank you again!

No problem

As a final note, Lucy is working on getting all of her father's collection restored, photographed and recorded for exhibition

Some of the long thought lost original plasticine/clay sculpts for the Apoc aliens are among them, including ones that never made it into the game such as the Demonoid, Sonic Alien, Carnosaur, Alien Wolf and so on

If you keep an eye on "Tim White" hits on google i'm hoping she will succeed in getting an event online over the coming years - i guess we'll see.
