As a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's works, I was hoping for an immersive experience from this. Unfortunately, the game fails to deliver on almost every front, the ending(s) especially left me with nothing but boredom and disappointment.


The gameplay mechanics feel outdated and janky, exploration through what should be the eerie and mysterious, is instead a tedious chore of repetitive gameplay and boring investigations. Puzzles are simplistic and offer no real accomplishment. Character Points (CP) mean little to nothing.

The biggest failure of this game is its inability to capture the essence of Lovecraft's mythos. I went into this game after looking at the trailers thinking it grasped the mythos perfectly. Sadly, the game missed the mark entirely. Although the atmosphere feels dark and mysterious, it's devoid of any real tension and lacks Lovecraftian essence.

The narrative is absolutely underwhelming, the story unfolds in a very confusing fashion and makes little to no sense majority of the time. The characters all have the same, or similar models & lack any individuality. I still don't know really get who Sarah Hawkins is...


In conclusion Call of Cthulhu was pretty disappointing. It's a bland, uninspired game that like most games, fail to grasp the world of Lovecraft correctly. Grab it while on sale.

Call of Cthulhu is a first-person adventure narrative Lovecraftian game where you play as Edward Pierce, a Great War veteran suffering from PTSD and nightmares, who currently works as a private detective in Boston. A famous influencer hires you to investigate a case related to the tragic death of his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson in a fire. He's convinced that something is not right about it.

The game has 14 chapters and takes around 9 hours to finish. Despite the illusion of an open world, the game follows a set path, and you can't choose where to go. There are 4 different endings affected by your choices, and you can unlock all 4 ending options in a single playthrough.

The most interesting, yet not particularly crucial mechanic in the game is character's skills. There are 7 skills that affect dialogue options, finding clues, lockpicking, destroying barricades, etc. As you progress through the game, you will be given Character Points to upgrade your skills. Each upgrade increases the skill by 5%, but even a well-developed skill doesn't guarantee successful application unless it's maxed out at 100%. However, the impact on gameplay is limited. For example, the Investigation perk, when successfully used, provides more detailed information about an incident. If unsuccessful, you still get information, but just less comprehensive. It's cool but doesn't significantly affect the game progression. Skills like Occultism and Medicine can only be improved by examining books, special items, and at the start of the game when you have 8 available character points.

The game doesn't allow manual saves and autosaves after each decision. There are no second chances - for example, if you fail to pick a lock, that door remains closed, forcing you to find an alternative route. Game progress is saved in a single file.

At first, I expected more combat elements, but unfortunately, you only get to shoot near the end, and even then, it's only in one chapter. You simply click LMB. There's no need to aim at all.

Even though I found the visuals of the game to be pretty average, I must admit that the atmosphere is great, and the last chapter is visually stunning.

The game has its flaws, but I got it on sale and I am satisfied with my purchase. The atmosphere and story are the game's strongest sides. Overall, it's a good H.P. Lovecraft inspired game.
