Is there any way to use full manual aiming instead of the weird lock on mechanic?

When I press "Play", the game's entry in Steam's game list turns into "Advent Rising - Running", but a few seconds later it turns back into its original state. There's no game icon in the task bar, no error message, nothing. I've tried launching the new "Play Advent Rising.exe" as admin, I've tried every compatibility option, no luck. I can still play the game, and the unofficial Advent Revising patch makes it pretty playable (and yes, I've tried the new launcher/version without the Revising files install...
