I don't see why people would bother if there is no 3D match engine!

What exactly effects players increase/decrease likelyhood? I had a player I bought at 3.3 improve 1.4 to 4.7 in league 8 allowing me to dominate, but most of the time no one ever increases more than 0.1 or 0.2 and at the end of the year they all tend to drop in strength. How can I effect this more/how can I tell who is going to increase?...
