Is there a live playerbase for this version or would I be better off jumping straight to Accent Plus R?

I'm interested in knowing the entire series story, and gaining this knowledge with as few games as possible. If someone can answer the header question, that'd be enough. Even better is if an outline of what to play can be provided.
