Something broken? :)

Do combos work by the number of separate merges, one after the other? Or by the number of separate buildings/groups of buildings merged one after the other? So in the screenshot below you can see if I place the level 1 building circled in green, it would merge with group 1 and create a level 2 building, then that level 2 building would merge with groups 2 and 3 at the same time, for TWO separate merges. I've noticed pretty often now that at some point the game will just throw 1s and 2s at me when I have plenty of spots left. Like the game has artificially decided that it is over for me, and screws me over on purpose. It's getting pretty annoying to be playing with a solid strategy and with 25-30% of the spaces left, it's a guaranteed premature ending. What gives?...

Started playng 2-3 games and should have gotten at least couple of achievements according to their description but I have received none. Does anybody also have a problem with that?
