KOTOR 2 has its moments, but this review section need balance. For me there were two major issues: pacing and misleading quest design.

So, pacing. The beginning of the game is very slow. The first three major areas of the game (Peragus Station, Telos, and Nar Shaddaa) have repetitive rooms of identical enemies and large expanses you repeatedly have to run across. Nar Shaddaa just plops you in a large space and you basically have to do a bunch of random side quests just to get somebody's attention so the plot can advance. Once you get past this, the next three major areas (Dantooine, Onderon, Korriban) are surprisingly fast. After that you might expect to be in the home stretch, but it suddenly slows down again (not getting too deeply into that because spoilers). Anyway, it took way too long to get fun for me. For the record, I was using the restored content mod, so that might be part of the problem.

Misleading quest design: I have two major examples and I'm going to avoid spoiling any twists although I am touching on the plot of the game. So, first example: when you arrive at Telos you get a quest called "Arrested" where you aren't allowed to leave Citadel Station until a Republic ship returns from investigating your shenanigans at Peragus station. Knowing videogames, one might expect that completing quests on Citadel station will progress time and trigger the ship to return, right? So you do quests and eventually unlock a way to sneak off of Citadel station. But if you're trying to be light side, you might not want to sneak away while you're under arrest, especially since the authorities seem pretty reasonable, right? So I did all the quests on Citadel station, including various stuff to help the authorities, expecting that either something would trigger the ship to return or the authorities would let me out for good behavior. Nothing worked. I wasted a lot of time hunting for quests that might possibly trigger the end of the arrested quest. It occurred to me that a quest I got from the authorities required me to leave the station so maybe I could interpret that as permission to leave and maybe the arrested quest was bugged. So I used the sneaking off the station route and... it turns out that sneaking away is what prompts the ship to return, you technically left without permission but it's fine. In universe, if you had just waited five minutes you could have left the station legally, but in game there is no way to leave the station legally.

The other misleading quest almost made me rage quit in the last hour of the game (keeping this vague to avoid spoilers). Basically, the big bad gives you a major choice between two options and instructs a henchman to tell you which door represents option 1 and which represents option 2. The henchman never tells you though! You're stuck choosing one at random and searching around a big maze until you see an indication of whether you have the door you want. And of course, the whole area is very uniform looking, so it would be hard to figure out which save to reload to switch choices. Thankfully, it turns out you can back out of either of the choice areas and go to the other one as long as you didn't go all the way into the next area, but it's not like this is communicated anywhere.

Things I enjoyed: there were some exciting plot twists and some good funny moments. I appreciated the occasional moral complexity. I appreciated how skills and attributes opened up dialogue options (especially how INT gives you dialogue options of your character solving puzzles for you, though as far as I could tell this was only the case for a couple puzzles early on). I experienced no major technical issues, though granted I was using the restored content mod which contains a lot of bug fixes.

Why anyone would want to play a third person adventure game that looks like a hack and slash but uses dice will likely be ever beyond me. The story is apparently good but the gameplay is decidedly not.
