To put it simply, if you've played XCOM and have that as a reference, this is WH40K meets XCOM.

If you haven't played XCOM, if you like squad-based, turn-based tactical missions that function within a larger decision-driven, strategic framework and campaign, you will probably enjoy this game.

To balance against those who rated it negatively on the basis that XCOM did it better, consider this: if XCOM never existed, the same players would be singing nothing but praise for Chaos Gate.

So if you're on the fence, don't let the naysayers turn you away. It's not perfect, but it's definitely a solid and satisfying game. Easily 4/5 stars.

My sentiment matches some of the other people here. The gameplay is very stale and boring, you do the same thing over and over again. Go to a planet, kill some guys, leave, wait, repeat. There isn't even any additional content on planets worth exploring for. I've always thought XCOM looked cool, but this isn't it.

Another gripe was the space marines just being faceless dudes I couldn't get attached to.

I like WH40k, but that wasn't enough to save this game for me.

Its essentially an XCOM (2013-2020) clone. And I do mean clone, its a straight copy of most of the UI and mechanics with minimal changes to the point I would not be surprised if this was built originally as an overhaul mod. None of that is bad, it just makes the disappointing parts more apparent.

Thematically, its very weak. These feel more like armored teddy bears than space marines, much less grey knights. These guys are overly squishy - which is not what Grey Knights are. The game play is overly dependent on procedural and RNG elements, and it drags the whole experience down. Enemy variety is weak in application, which is not helped by those RNG elements. It's less tactical and more "you just need to grind".
