Hotfix 1.0.2 - Falling pieces damage, remove version numbers and more!

Fellow Hogardians!

We’ve just pushed a fresh hotfix to smooth out a few bumps.

Here’s a quick look at what’s been updated:

Fixes & Tweaks

Resolved an issue where falling pieces weren’t dealing damage correctly — gravity hurts again!
The final campaign pop-up now appears when it should (no more silent victories).
Added an option to hide version numbers from the UI for a cleaner look.
You can now set any screen resolution you want — enjoy the freedom to play your way!

Recycling before waves

Howdy, I'm fresh off the Extreme campaign and I'm dabbling with the skirmish mode, having finished the first one (Forgotten Glade) on extreme. Not too hard of a scenario, but one thing felt "off" during my playthrough. I'm playing on extreme and the game feels much less of a challenge than before. One would expect picking up right before going to depths to face real difficulty but its like tutorial missions. The earlier ones on extreme when the game first went to EA were much harder and better balanced....

Last but not least: New Hotfix!

Here’s a breakdown of the latest hotfix, aimed at smoothing your experience and ironing out a few lingering issues:

Added missing dialogue line for outpost destruction in 4-0 (spoiler alert).
Survival enemy markers now appear when 50 enemies remain.
Players can no longer destroy the outpost in 2-0 without triggering failure.
Temporary fix for final level wave markers; permanent solution coming soon.
Resolved LOD misapplication issues.
Corrected missing scenario descriptions.
Fixed bug preventing selection of specific building pieces.
Disabled difficulty selection for survival maps created in the editor.
Brightness settings screen now behaves as intended.
Survival booster reward screen now closes correctly post-selection.
Fixed issue with multiple unit deployment on the same spot.
Resolved Mistlight piece becoming unavailable after reloading.
Updated localization to improve translations across several languages.

Cataclismo - is not feels like meat grinder strategy

I guess many gamers came to Cataclismo as fans of meat grinder strategies (same as myself). And it's kind of a disappointment that Cataclismo feels much more like a citybuilder, rather than a meat grinder strategy. I passed the campaign on extreme, and what did I do 99% of the time? 1) Set on pause and build maximally compact slums to save resources. 2) Maxing wood income and balancing oxygen income. 3) Keep research and hire queues busy every second. Home Extension issue

is it just me, or perhaps am i misunderstanding something regarding placement? But when I place down a home extension, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt... right now I have one placed ontop of 4 homes with the adjacent indicator squares touching 3 homes, yet only one is getting the benefit. In another area, I have the exact same setup, but 2 homes are getting the benefit......

They are Billions meets Lego.

This is simply put a great game.
The lore is really interesting, it reminds me of a more grown up version of Shadow&Bone and the "Horrors" (at least some of them) remind me of "Dark Spawn" from Dragon Age Origins.
The campaign is really well made, lengthy and there is a lot of variety in the missions and side missions, where you are encouraged to build tall - literally.
If you played and liked games like the mentioned They are Billions, Democracy is not an option or Age of Darkness, you'll also enjoy this - with unique building mechanics, a weather system that matters, a workshop for community maps and more :)

I can't help but compare this to They Are Billions (TAB). Both are horde-defense city builders, but Cataclismo exhibits many improvements that make the game much more fun to play. I played both games on their highest difficulty settings (for the achievements).

Comparing the campaigns, Cataclismo's campaign has the same overall structure. There are city building, tower defense, and hero missions. Compared to TAB, hero missions are actually fun to play; and not a slog like they are in TAB (running around in circles for hours as you individually shoot down hundreds of zombies). The missions primarily serve to progress the story, so they are quick and eventful.

Perhaps as a result, Cataclismo's campaign felt much shorter; I finished it in about a third of the time as TAB. But there is still plenty of game left, since there are skirmish maps, survival mode, and workshop maps to play with if you wish for more.

I also noted the following improvements compared to TAB:

You get access to splash damage much quicker. For a game about hordes, TAB is extremely stingy with its splash damage.
There is free respec-ing during the campaign. Although this has less of an impact in Cataclismo.
The Hero unit actually takes part in normal missions.
Raiding attacks aren't random like in TAB, so there aren't random waves that can kill you before you've even built a wooden wall.
The built-in save system (Time Anchors) makes it much easier to recover from mistakes. It's still not as good as a normal save system though.
There aren't as many resources to manage for the city-building aspect of things. (Just Oxygen as upkeep instead of Food, Energy, and Gold.) And resources flow in continuously, which is much more intuitive.

They Are Billions + Lego. As the smallest kid in my class, my first-grade teacher nicknamed me turtle. Pretty sure this is why I love turtling in RTS/strategy games.

Cataclismo offers a few new ideas to the grow and wall-up gameplay loop that They Are Billions perfected. The main addition here is the building mechanics. Instead of just slapping down one row of walls you need to stack each brick individually. The taller the wall the stronger. You also get special blocks that can increase wall strength or give buffs to your troupes. Placing each brick might seem overwhelming, but here it's actually crazy good. This building system is so good I'll want similar ones in other games.

Like They Are Billions and others, you'll be balancing the pause button with short bursts of exploration and growth. My one complaint is that once the horde starts coming, it's not really that hard to stop it. There's a whole slew of Workshop maps to tool your own difficulty. But I would appreciate more challenge in the otherwise excellent story campaign.

Lastly, one of my favorite aspects about Cataclismo is the art direction. I love the stylization on display. Characters have easy-to-read designs that are creative and unique.
