A founding member of the Rangers, along with Amara. An old hand with geological surveys, she's highly experienced in the use of bombs and gunpowder. She's never understood why Amara did what she did ten years ago, and joins the protagonist's journey in order to discover the truth of why Amara left Azuria.
The loyal retainer of Vermeil's queen, he is instrumental in carrying out her will. In the shadows, he directs espionage units in various areas, trying to strengthen Vermeil's power by any means necessary. He comes to Azuria with Eleanor in order to present the idea of crossing the Meridian to Azuria's king, but is rejected.
Ever since the covenant was formed after the civil war, he, a Wyverian, and his Magnamalo, Wardenfang, have guarded the gate at the Meridian. Seeing the protagonist and their Skyscale Rathalos, he is reminded of Amara from ten years ago.
The leader of Sheparden, a village that reveres Canynes. Having lost their original home to the Encroachment, they've now settled near the Meridian. As the numbers of their Canyne wards decrease, they were prepared to accept the end of their way of life as they know it. However...
Gaul's Monstie, a Legiana. It works alongside Gaul to support the protagonist's journey.
Ogden's Monstie, a Pukei-Pukei with a big appetite. So friendly to humans that it boasts a coterie of fans who enjoy petting its down.
Kora's Monstie, a Gravios. Since it eats rocks, it's very well-suited to accompanying Kora on her geological surveys, in addition to normal Ranger duties.
This floating Elder Dragon is colossal enough to have an ecosystem of flora living on it. It consumes the earth and swallows forests whole as it wanders in search of rich soil. It's feared in Sheparden as "a force of nature." Rather than wandering about, this particular specimen has long resided in the Canalta Timberland. A portion of its body is crystallized.
Side stories are additional storylines centered around the protagonist and their fellow Rangers. With side stories spotlighting each of the protagonist's friends, you can get to know them more deeply. In addition, by completing side stories you can gain a variety of benefits for party gameplay, such as rewards useful in progressing the game, new weapons or Monsties for the Rangers, or the strengthening of their unique skills.
You'll begin the game by customizing your character in the character creator. Choose variables like body, hairstyle, and skin color to make the protagonist your own. Customization is also available during the course of the game, from the Rangers' base.
Players with save data from certain Monster Hunter series titles on their systems can obtain layered armor for the protagonist in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection.

◆ Characters
The prince (or princess) of Azuria, and captain of the Rangers. They're highly skilled, and the only Rathalos Rider in the country. The protagonist has been focused on their Ranger duties, protecting monster ecosystems and researching egg quartz, when a shocking event changes everything. They come to realize they have little to no understanding of the events in the world or the hand humankind had in causing them, and in order to learn the truth, they set out across the Northern Meridian and into forbidden ground.
A Rider and the princess of Vermeil. As the situation in Vermeil worsens, relations with Azuria, as outlined by the nations' covenant, become increasingly strained. Eleanor offers herself as a hostage to Azuria in an attempt to ease the tensions. She cares deeply for her own Monstie, and is moved by witnessing the Rangers' activities. Wanting to understand her sister the queen's motivations, she accompanies the protagonist on their journey to the Northern Meridian.
A Royal Felyne, whose family has served Azuria's royalty for generations. He's served as the protagonist's Palico since they were very young, and bears a deep devotion to the king and the Azurian royal family. Though he feels conflicted about disobeying the king and leaving Azuria, he eventually makes the decision to travel with the protagonist across the Northern Meridian and toward the Sacrosanctum.
A young man who's pleasant and agreeable with everyone. He has no family to speak of, and first met the protagonist while wandering the Azurian forest. Having grown up with the protagonist, he's their closest friend and confidante. The two of them entered the Rangers at the same time, and have worked together ever since. Simon admires the protagonist's mother Amara, who founded the organization.
A brand-new member of the Rangers. She loves Poogies and other creatures, and is naturally attuned to the world around her. Her innate skill led to her being chosen for the Rangers, and she follows the protagonist, whom she greatly admires, expressing her devotion through her actions. She's always accompanied by her Poogie, Pookie.
The king of Azuria and father of the protagonist. Despite faltering relations with their neighbor Vermeil, he maintains a steady, stoic demeanor. Wanting to uphold the covenant his forebears made with the Wyverians, he is strictly against anyone crossing the Northern Meridian. He has high expectations for the protagonist's ability to protect the country, as their sole Rathalos Rider.
The protagonist's mother and queen of Azuria. She founded the Rangers, with the aim of protecting and preservering the natural environment. Ten years prior, in opposition to the execution of one of the two Rathalos twins dubbed to be cursed, she absconded with one of them, never to be seen again.
Rathalos were thought extinct in Azuria, but ten years prior, the protagonist's mother found a crystallized egg in the forest, from which Ratha was hatched. As one of a pair of twin Skyscale Rathalos, the birth was considered an omen of disaster. The protagonist's Monstie.
Eleanor's Monstie. Because it's a Monstie from Vermeil, it looks different than those you can find in Azuria.
Thea's Monstie. From wall climbing to gliding, it's capable of a variety of Riding Actions.
Simon's Monstie. Legiana are common Monstie choices among Azurian Rangers and Wyvern Brigade members.
It is stronger than the regular species, and its whole body is covered in armor. While some think it has been artificially enhanced, details are unknown.
A Skyscale Rathalos born ten years ago from egg quartz discovered in Blightstone Woods. As twins were prophesied to bring disaster, it was sentenced to death, but it fled Azuria with Amara's help. With its body now covered in armor, it's clearly the Monstie of some unknown Rider. It appears to stand in the way of the protagonist as they attempt to stop the fighting between the troops of Azuria and Vermeil.
Using its long tongue, this Amphibian can grab objects and food from a distance.
