How are the Legion missiles coded?

As a modder, I've had an idea for a "cluster-mine" launcher that launches a single block, that then spawns many mines around it then self-destructs. I notice this mod has somthing very similar, exept with missiles. Any tips on how this system works, and how I could adapt it for my own use?

I can't even launch them for some reason, my mine launchers just don't work :/
