No recent changes were made that should affect the game on casual difficulty. But a number of changes were made to increase the difficulty of challenging and, especially, impossible.
What I suspect is happening is that the AIs in your more recent games have lucked into good starting placements, which have juiced their economy and allowed them to produce more units than you're used to seeing.
If you're seeking a more casual experience so you won't encounter the AIs for quite some time, I suggest playing on your own world to start. Choose the Elven World perk or the Undead World perk before you start a new game. Either of those (costing 5 pts each) will enable you to start in a resource rich (but more dangerous) world that the AI won't access for at least 50+ turns.
