Also, before the Air Strike, there was the Cow Mangler, which not only uses a unique rocket model, but also a unique reload animation.
As far as the game's logic goes, it's a rocket.
Is there a mod to use these rockets allready? That would be awesome.
The Cow Mangler isn't actually a rocket launcher. I remember it being tf_weapon_particle_cannon rather than tf_weapon_rocketlauncher (same thing with airstrike, tf_weapon_rocketlauncher_airstrike)
The projectile it launches is also different, it's called the tf_projectile_energy_ball rather than tf_projectile_rocket.
This however in no way stops them from adding additional projectiles, as the projectile of a weapon can be changed with the "override projectile id" attribute.
Of cource it has a different name, otherwise it would cause conflicts.
But as far as the game is concerned, it's a rocket with a particle effect.

they'd need to edit every rocketlauncher to add the rocket to the reload animation (or not, because the default one is missing anyways) and they need to add new projectile scripts to the game.
They'd rather just add 3,000 new hats to the game that actually something people like.
