Dogs of War (Item Set)
My comment to the creator which was far over 1000 characters
Sorry I posted a discussion, but I went with twice the amount of characters then the comment section allowed. I'm extremely impressed with the design and the animating work put into these, but I don't think it's ready yet to be put into the game. For a first submission, this is very detailed and well thought out. I think you should have started off smaller though, something this big is complex compared to starting projects like hats. Valve has never added any workshop-submitted buildings, so that might also be something to consider. I'll provide my opinion, which is long, but I was so excited by this project I had to express my feelings!

The models are awesome. The design is detailed and well built, and I love the cute little lights on the El Jefe. I think the eyes look odd, maybe they'd be better as the lights on front of the Sentry. Also I don't think the design of the head on the Big Lug is as nice as the design of the El Jefe, the jaw seems a little boring.

The animations are awesome, that's not my problem with them. But I think it takes too long to complete the animation. For balance reasons, I think it's likely the dogs wouldn't be able to actually activate quickly enough. If Valve sped up the animations, it would probably ruin them. I think the animation could be simpler and shorter.

I already expressed my opinion on the eyes, but I didn't really like the textures. I noticed it looks like you used multiple different colors. I can see a difference between the smaller dog's back and front torso paint. I think it would look better if it was more consistent. Also, I saw some checkered paint on the Big Lug. I think it seems out of place when that pattern only appears on the mini-sentry.

My big problem though: I didn't see what it would look like on the Blue team! That's really important.

Overall, I'm super disappointed to down vote this. BUT I want to see a version 2.0 in the workshop in the future! After you practice more, I'm sure you can make this much better, and I'll be super sad if you don't. If it helps, there is a forum where experienced item makers meet & critique each other. You might have already seen it, but it's on a website called Face Punch. I'll leave a link to the most recent thread here[facepunch.com], but I think you need to make an account on the site first.

Please keep working on submissions, you show amazing potential. I'm going to keep looking for more work by you, and hopefully you'll consider my ideas if you ever decide to reinvent this in the future. Thanks for spending time to read this. -Noob :octodad:

Wow, thanks for the detailed response! We had a bit more creative license with El Jefe than we did with Big Lug. In game, the mini sentry is just different.. its almost like a little chihuahua.. something you don't ignore completely but also it acts tough just like its big cousin :D We decided to embellish that a bit and make it a bit more unstable / hence the bulging eyes and psychotic stare / shakes.

Regarding the animation length - to transform from a gun form to a dog form just takes a lot of steps. So rather than just blast through it and not show anyone the details / thoughts we made slower transform versions. You can speed up some segments and slow down others to approach roughly what we show in the "Introducing: Dogs of War" video. We figured it would in game have to morph in 1-2 seconds or it wouldn't be very effective. We'll do some revised sequences timed correctly and post them - but yeah in the end its up to the developers to implement this as they see fit. TLDR: Its the sequence, ignore the timing in our videos.

With changes, we'll check the textures out on the models too - a blue version is in order and shouldn't be too difficult.

As far as other items, we're already working on them ;)

Thanks for the feedback and we'll check out the site you linked! We developed this as our first project and we knew it was difficult - but it was perfect for breaking in our division of work, brainstorming sessions, etc.

Thanks for responding.

I like that you compared the mini-sentry with a chihuahua, that's really good. I was actually more unsure about the eyes on the Big Lug, the El Jefe I thought looked pretty good with those eyes. I should have asked, is the Big Lug supposed to resemble a bull dog?

Okay with the animation sequence, that makes sense.

I'm so glad to hear you're making more items! I can't wait!

Also, I forgot to mention it's really nice you're planning on donating and proceeds to charity. That's very thoughful of your team.

Our 3d Artist is doing some work to show you the eyes and how they'll contribute to the model. They arent static. I'll post the link here so everyone can see. Hopefully we'll have it up tomorrow.

The next item we're making is clothing related (and possibly adding in a taunt to go with it) so it should be a lot less complex. We're just about ready to produce it in 3d.. it will be unique!

Regarding the charity - its actually our front end business so its all part of what we do. We're making a program to certify veterans on game design / implementation so our work here will help shape that. We'll keep on publishing items as we have spare cycles in the art team :)

Thanks!
